Recently bought two secondhand rubies stormtrooper costumes, and before any one gets all geeky on me they are for hireing out!! But one of the helmets is quite badly damaged crack straight through, piece above lens missing large chunks of paint missing, could you in idiots terms and not in joined up writing tell me how to repair this? And what shade of white is best for respray, also how do you clean black scuff marks of, I make theatre costumes but normaly period stuff this is a little out of my remit! And I'd like to do a reasonable job. And how the hell do you keep the damn things on and not wobbling about, please be gentle with me it my first time. |

Most times with a rubies costume it's going to be a hard vinyl and it's a bugger to patch or repair mate, and probably cost more in time and effort than buying one from a reputable maker...Sorry it's not good news |

Ok well thanks for that, think I will have a go with milliput and filler first, these things will get hired out and probabally not be treated with to much care, so I will botch it up first, get it hired out a few times and then get a new one, what glue would you recommend , somebody's had a go with evostick, how about getting the scuff marks out? I've got to say I read up on the rubies stuff before it bought it and its actually better than I thought, but would love to handle some of the 501 stuff, to see the comparison, |

Halfords bumper repair filler as this should flex with the helmet. Sand all the helmet down and use a white close to the rest of the costume. |

The scuff marks are just black marks but don't want to use anything that might leave a matt spot, would bath cleaner work? Luckily the lipstick just wiped off??????? (Allegedly the costume had only been worn once for a party, interesting party!) I will have a look at the halfords filler, what sort of paint would you recommend, not sure what its made off and don't want a case of the incredible melting stormtrooper, did any one else see that film at the pictures? 1978 I think, scared the life out of me at the time I was about 13, any way back to Star Wars, saw that in Lester square in 77 happy days, would plasticote be ok, I do have a compresser and spray gun so can load up pretty much anything, and could re spray all armour to get a good match as it is a bit on the off white side, I have two sets, one is the rubies delux and then there is this one which is the rubies not so delux, seems to be the same quality of armour but not as nicely finished, and the helmet moulding is a little rough, and slightly wobbly, like some one used hammeright or its got mild cellulite. The broken one is the rubies not so delux, can the cracks be sured up on the inside at all, with fibreglass or something? |

If its just scuff marks then t cut or rubbing compound would do it and they will make it shinier too as the yare mildy abrasive as well. if theyre particularily deep scuffs you could sand them first with wet and dry paper starting with a courser grade and work up to a finer one. Steer clear of plasticote paint it is dreadful stuff !! Use halfords spray or another decent car spray. |
