I was told this info by a friend. He said that there is a disused railway track at thrybourgh, and if u walk along it on a nite you can hear trains comming up behind you, when the track as not been used in years. There are also children seen playing on the tracks the dissapear as you approach them. Not sure if this is a true ghost story or urban legand. I have never heard it before. Do you guys know anything about it?

Never heard of it but sounds interesting. a lot of disused railways and lines are connected with stories of children playing and the sound of trains. could well be the stone tape theory bedded into the earth as trains are heavy loud and monterous things to they would leave a good imprint in the the fabric of time.

I have no idea where in thryburgh the tracks are. Or as i said if it's just an urban legand. He was sketchy on details. the sound of the train is more likley to be stone tape, but there are tales of 'ghost trains' as u know. The kids could be stone tape too. I am not even sure where thryburgh is (is it near Dalton?) as i dont know that part of rotherham well, so good look and I hope u find more out than I have LOL!!! Let me know how U get on.

Yes it is near Dalton, we will have to enquire more about the whereabouts of this location and investigate

I can see this is an old topic but I just came across it and thought I'd reply as I used to live in Thrybergh (correct spelling) and I lived at the side of the railway that ran from Silverwood Pit, which is now dissused. I have never heard of any hauntings on the railway myself but I do know for a fact that a young boy was killed on the railway just a few hundred yards from our house many years ago (can't remember the exact year, must have been late 60's or early 70's). Also there is a story of a man being killed on the line nearer to Silverwood Colliery although I can't be 100% sure of this but my husband says it was one of his relatives. Hope this helps clear some things up.

I also used to live by the side of the tracks and have heard the story of the little lad who was killed. I lived there in the early 80's (I have just had a story published in Down Your Way reminiscing about my time in Thrybergh lol) and I believe it happened sometime in the 70's as I know my mum used to worry about us playing on the tracks cos there was always sections of the concrete fencing missing. I haven't heard any stories of hauntings though but it's possible.

Hi Chele, going on what you say about the concrete fence missing you must have lived on the opposite side from me where there was no fence when I lived there,, well non that was any good anyway. I once went to a medium who told me that the apparent paranormal activity that used to happen at our house (regularly over many years) was the spirit of the boy. Dunno if I believe that our not but whatever it was it had to be paranormal,,,I still can't work out an explanation for it, it was bizarre!

Now I come to think about it, it was round about the time the boy got killed that the activity started, but can't be sure about that, it's a long time ago now lol
