Heat-Pistons Trade; NEEDS LEAGUE APPROVAL

Heat get:
C Shaquille O'Neal
PG Isiah Thomas
SG Darrell Walker
SF Orlando Woolridge

Pistons get:
SF Jamal Mashburn
PF Marlon Maxey
SG Steve Smith
C Geert Hammink
Heat 1995 1st round pick

--Obviously, Miami gets the best player in this deal (and keeps their budding franchise PG Jason Kidd), but they also take on the albatross that is Isiah Thomas, along with the barely serviceable Woolridge and Walker. Detroit takes four young players with good upside and a first-round selection to potentially add another top youngster. So, I leave it up to the league. We need two approvals before we get three rejections for this deal to go through. PJR and I will count as one approval once he replies. And I'm sure the Heat would like to set a new lineup before tomorrow's sim, so any GM's adding their vote as soon as they see this would be appreciated.

I'm going to have to be a no on this one.

I think Thomas's contract is less of an albatross in a league that has amnesty. The Pistons didn't use thiers last year, so they can get rid of him for free at the end of the season. Similarly, the Heat didn't use theirs, so they aren't really burdened by that part of the trade.

Steve Smith hasn't improved since I've been in the league, and really has no place on the court given his stats.

That pretty much leaves me evaluating Mashburn/Maxey/Hammink/1st for Shaq. Unfortunately, I just don't think you get rid of a true franchise player unless it is for something really special. I don't see those guys as special enough. If I was the Piston's GM, this trade really wouldn't come close to what I'd be looking for.

The Pistons aren't really in rebuilding mode. They have great young players at 3 positions and have a winning record. If the Pistons were 2-12, I could see why they might trade Shaq for lots of youth & potential. But they're one good off-season from being a playoff stalwart.

This basically seems to be Shaq for Mashburn, Hammink & a if they are lucky lottery pick (Although the Heat would obviously be a lot better instantly with Shaq). Steve Smith has shown no signs of improving and can't even score good (Or play defense). Marlon Maxey is ok, but yeah. I'd say one more draft pick from the Heat should be given.

i just cant see a team giving up a shaq for this. plus, i dont want shaq in my division.

but seriously, if shaq was on my team he would be virtually untradable. quality over quantity.

No way. There's no way the Pistons trade Shaq without getting a superstar in return in this situation. A big fat veto from me. If this was Mashburn and Kidd, then I would pass it.
2008: 61-21 - Eastern Conference Champions
2009: 62-20
2010: 38-44
2011: 41-41

Well, according to what JStarr said, this is already a done deal, but I have to agree with the rejectors.

Miami is giving up some decent players, but Detroit is losing a franchise guy. This deal would set them back, and if they are in a rebuilding mode then this isn't going to do it. I would think that a team that wanted to rebuild would drop the older, talented players and get draft picks and young promising guys, all the while not giving up the key young talent they already have. Shaq is a guy that you build a franchise around.

Quite frankly any deal involving Shaq being traded would have to include multiple first round picks.

Well let's be honest here, TBA's vote should only count for like a quarter vote.

This made me think. You're right, they aren't in rebuilding mode ... they're in building mode. You said it yourself, they're one good off-season from being a playoff stalwart. That means they aren't yet. That means they're still building towards something. Perhaps a straight big man in the middle isn't what the Pistons want. That may not be the team he wants to build.

This trade of Shaq gives Detroit another quality young player in Mashburn and another first rounder. Plus, you get Maxey who is good enough.

Getting rid of Isiah isn't diminished by the fact that he's got amnesty. He just got rid of Thomas and now has a way to trim another piece of fat with that amnesty since he doesn't have to waste it on Thomas now (if he chooses to use it).

I don't see this being THAT bad of a trade.

I vote yes for what it's worth.

Surely you aren't saying that Maxey and Mashburn even come close to being the kind of franchise player that O'Neal is? You have two guys that probably aren't even in the top ten for their positions compared to one guy that is probably (as in real life) going to be at the very least in the top 3 of his position.

We didn't really get any rationale from TP and tba for their approvals...hell, tba may have been just anxious to get Shaq the hell out of his division. frongi's reasoning is candy-ass, but at least it's reasoning.

The only approval that's come with any reasoning is HttK's, and the rest has been a big sea of "hell, no's." Yannow, if we could fill this damn league, we wouldn't have these problems.

Deal rejected.
