^ They still argue about whether he is to be considered a heroic figure (trying to free slaves) or a terrorist (murdering people and violating law). It's an irony of history that the first person being killed by John Brown's men during the raid on Harpers Ferry was a free African American. Taking someone from the same time: Benjamin Butler - Federal general during the civil war. He was one of the first to arm freed slaves to fight for the union. He didn't prove much of a general or a politician though. In the south he became one of the most hated federal generals for issuing the following order:

Frederick Douglas - A slave who escaped and became quite famous and engaged in politics. He took direct influence on Abraham Lincoln's policy and did whatever he could to free the slaves. After the civil war he remained active in civil rights movements until his death in 1895. |
