Something strange I've noticed; with the signature awards....

I've noticed a lot of members here with signature awards that say stuff like "Most Proactive Member 2007 (or 2006)", "Best Fanart 2007", "Best Projects 2007", "Friendliest Member 2007"... you get the picture. Now, here's my take: Wouldn't it make more sense if the awards for a particular year were handed out the next year? It sure seems to me like it's a little early for the 2007 awards. :p Now, I've only been here for around a month and a half or something like that, and I really don't know how this process works, or how it's decided. However, giving out the awards that early seems premature and even unfair to new members that join up in the second half of the year. Is there a particular reason that it has to be so early, and not at a more reasonable time?

I'm a historian. I MUST be like that!

The idea came up in spring of 2006. Unwilling to wait for the rest of the year for the idea to be realized we had the voting for the awards right then and the second voting was about one year after the last one. The year refers to the year of the vote, not so much to the period of time covered by the vote (otherwise we would either have to relocate the voting to the end of a year or make the awards "2006 / 2007" awards which would look kind of awkward. Also by including the year of the vote rather than a limited period of time we are avoiding any implication along the lines of: "he or she was good, but only within the given space of time".

Huh? Oh, yes, it did. I'm just used to the way things are at the 3D Movie Maker community I'm at, where the awards for a particular year are awarded to the directors after said year. For example, the 2006 awards were announced June or July of 2007. However, I guess here, the awards are not the year of the achievement, but the year of the voting.
