Er, it had nothing to do with the writers dodging the issue of death. Phoenixes actually are reborn from their own ashes in the original myths. They were just keeping true to the tale of a mythical creature is all. Now if they had something from mythology that just did not resurrect once killed do the same, there would be an issue, but in the case of a phoenix, they did not cheapen death. Either way, it was not a writing fumble, and death was not the theme of the episode. The moral of the episode was that you should not jump to conclusions. Fluttershy thougth the bird was sick and dying, but it turned out just to be a Poenix (a beast of myth that DID rise from the ashes at the end of their cycles) and needed no such extra attention. She should have inquired about Philomena further instead of birdnapping her. Besides which, the creators of the show have stuck true to the myths and legends surrounding the various fantastic beasts that show up, why should their treatment of a Phoenix have been any different? It WAS a good episode, as are all 26 of FiM's season one episodes. Not a single bad one yet. EDIT: Hub Updates EDIT: Wikipedia Phoenix Article |

That wasn't aimed at you. I'm trying to stress to pokerplayer that the point of the episode was not death and that fidelity to the mythology around these creatures featured has been par for the course from the beginning. EDIT: I have a quote from another fan of the series from when a similar discussion cropped up, and with his permission, this is his take on the matter: "There wouldn't have been much a lesson with "Philomena stays dead". I think the only thing you could possibly glean from a bird turning to ash and falling upon your hooves is "death is going to happen to everyone. Get used to it." which is decidedly very cynical and very much tonally dissonant from the rest of the show's attitude Whoever this fan is, I don't think he realized that "rule of drama" is not always a good rule. There's a time and place for it. And there will never be a good enough time or place to justify completely ruining Fluttershy's psyche for most of her life. Besides, Philomena turning into a phoenix was awesome." |

Watching a bit of the pilot episode, I can safely say that I am actually starting to like this. Of course, it took like 10 tries to get past the theme song. But the music in the show is quite good...other than the theme song. The sad/scary art is my college life is eerily reminescent of Twilight's life. I haven't spoken to my high school friends in over two years. I literally spend hours in my college library. Granted, it's a 50-50 mix of actually studying and doing work and recreational library use. Granted my social life/skills aren't as bad as hers but from what people tell me, they're pretty bad. Add that to randomness and miscillaneous weirdness that Pinkie Pie has... NOT a good combination. |

I know the legend and I get what the message was. I know that a phoenix burns to ashes and is then reborn from those ashes. I also know that Fluttershy was meant to learn the lesson you pointed out. However, you must understand the one part of me that won't shut up whenever death is introduced, and it's the part of me that is just fed up at this point with how the element of death is treated with kid's shows in the US these days. I just can't stand it anymore. I want the element of death in a Kid's Show to be real, okay? I want there to be pain, suffering, sadness, the acceptance of moving on without that special someone and the changes that would come forth of that someone not being around anymore. When was the last time a Kid's Show in the US had the balls to rub such an element in front of the arrogant Soccer Mom's faces like that? All to teach them a very powerful lesson? I want someone to do this yet again with a Kid's Show. I'm fed up and I've had enough. I await the day the Element of Death is done justice. Some have come rather close, but not close enough to satisfy me. Does FiM have the balls to do it? We shall await and see.

Try the new Thundercats show. They stabbed and killed someone in the very first episode and it had plenty of impact. Enough so that it kicked off the entire plot. I get your argument, but what you wish would have needlessly destroyed Fluttershy and clashes with the tone the show set. Philomena dying would have contributed nothing other than manufacturing drama and ruining Fluttershy, emotionally. Drama for the sake of drama is a story-telling no-no, no matter how you look at it. If a show has to kill someone, then it should be to set off some sort of chain of events that either furthers the plot and/or gives the character the desired development, like The Land Before Time got the ball rolling for both with the death of Littlefoot's mother. I can understand your frustration, but MLP: FiM is not the right show for the Element of Death. |

I'm so glad we've got a confirmed date for the release of the first episode. Still, I don't have TV so I won't be watching it when it airs. In fact, I'm not going to watch ANY of season 2 until it's finished. Then I can download all the episodes at once and sit down and have a nice 8-hour marathon.

Okay, let's get off the subject and try something else. Aside from the main 6, who do you think Season 2 will put the main focus on? I know we have confirmation of Luna being focused on more, so that's good. However, what about others? Who do you think it should focus on? |

Ah so what I'm gathering is in season two of My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic is there will be new characters in season 2. Sometimes that kinda kills the season. But all time but sometimes it does. But I herd season 2 starts September 17th 2011. Witch I will watch when it comes ob The Hub. Or on You Tube. |

I will have to watch on youtube or download because I don't have a TV in my dorm and even when I return home, I don't get the The Hub. I'm kind of hoping it focuses more on the Wonderbolts. And I also hope that some episodes have the darker and grittier feel of the season one pilot. |

Yeah, I just skip the title sequence, and turn it off as quickly as I can before the end credits music starts. It's kind of a shame, because the theme-tune itself is pretty good. it's just the lyrics that push me off. And yes, that song aside, much of the music in this show kicks its own moderate share of ass. What makes it especially admirable to me is that from what I can tell, it is almost entirely done with keyboards and computer programs. The fact they managed to pull off a huge broadway-esque song like "At The Gala" (which nearly puts Disney showtunes to shame) with that kind of limitation is quite frankly astounding. |

One thing I'd be interested in seeing the show try is a mystery episode, I think they could pull one off. |

A full on Scooby-Doo parody would be hilarious. Perp: "Oh, and I would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for those meddling mares, and that gater!" |

Word. Like I said, I don't hate the tune, the lyrics just embarrass the hell out of me. But the background music is quite good. I mean, the episode Sonic Rainboom had a kickass industrial rock/orchestral hybrid that was like something out of the Matrix. |
