Had the car at Christchurch tyres today setting up all of the alignment and adjusting the camber, all is good however the castor figures are slightly out on what they should be and the car is heavier to steer one way than the other. Have been doing some research on this and it seems quite common on the golf and basically the subframe has come out of alignment, is there anyone on here that knows a bit about this and could possibly help me get it sorted. Thanks Chris |

the subframe is more or less fixed position........ has no real room for movement. i think somethings bent. |

Oh that's interesting I have read they can be moved on club gti. What's the likely suspect to be bent? |

well the holes in the subframe are the same size as the bolts so it should really tighten up within 5mm of where it should be and that would be in an extreme case! id say a top mount was knackered, wishbone bent, tie rod bent or seized ball joints....... or the rack is not central and/or is worn. it sounds like a moving part is in an unnatural position so that the steering movement cannot travel through its natural path. all the suspension joints are designed to move in a specific way so if one isnt in the right position it will work against the steering effort. as thats what its deisgned to do, allow movement only in certain paths. |

I have just fitted new coilovers this week, the top mounts looked ok. Is there any chance they are sat in the wrong position? I will get the garage to see if they can see anything obvious that looks bent I think from memory the castor on the n/s was -0.18degrees and the o/s was 2.12 degrees, not sure how far out that is but the car definitely steers heavier one way and would like to get it sorted |

New top mounts should have been a matter of corse. Try them and then maybe investigate the state of your wishbones and other related parts. |
