Broken wires to the switch. Happened on my Mk4 Golf. The wires broke close to the switch plug. Stripped and cut back a cm and reconnected everything and it was fine again

How far up should I go really I've had a look at the pins on the switch but they don't seem bad. But I've got some more plugs for it to try on the weekend.

Pins would be fine the vibrations etc break the wire a couple of cm from pins internally.

Test by putting the car in reverse with ignition turned and engine not running (get a mirror or friend to check rear lights while you work in the front) .........unplug the reverse switch and with another piece of wire, insert into plug to join the 2 pins (acts as if the switch is constantly on) jig, bend etc the wires and see if the reverse light randomly turn on and off.

If so the wires are broken and some cutting back and rejoining will be required.
