Tips for New LPers; Some Helpful Hints When Starting LPing

So...you want to enter the world of LPing. Great to have ya and welcome! I often get asked some tips on starting LPs, so here are a few things I'd recommend.

1. Persistence!
Clearly the one thing most starting LPers fail at. You are more than likely not going to make 10,000 subscribers in your first game. This was a trivia question on my fan contest...but I actually had under 100 subscribers my first five months of LPing. This was about 12 COMPLETED games (not including the abandoned ones) with under 100 people subscribed. Now...Dragon Age: Origins kind of took me off, but that is not really typical from what I've seen. If you're LPing looking for popularity...you'll likely quit. Most people who tell me they are starting never finish their first LP. LP because you truly love and enjoy doing it.

2. Quality
If you're recording your computer/TV screen with a video camera...it's unlikely you will get many people willing to watch. People want and expect high quality video. I use FRAPs now (starting at Dragon Age Origins)...before then, I used Snagit9 and BSR (only because I didn't really know about FRAPs). LPing can be expensive. I've been through about 3 microphones this year...my last one was roughly $45. So yea...it can be a bit.

3. Commentary
This has to be natural...some people have it, some people don't. You will see though that many LPers in the beginning are a bit awkward until eventually finding their rhythm. This is something that will likely naturally develop. I feel you need something to really differentiate you though. Something that makes you unique. My commentary tends to be very passionate. I really get into the games I'm playing. I treat it like more than just a video game. Is that nerdy? Of course, but that's also a reason many people love it. The Berserking Elf is an interesting character because he's unique. Your commentary is what will really make you as an LPer. I'm not overly skilled in these games. I'll never be a 'pro' but I feel i'm successful in LPs due to interesting commentary.

4. Voice
This one is tough. It's mean, but some people simply won't get far LPing because of this. We've all heard those voices that just grind nerves (heck even mine does it to many people). There are some voices that just won't work. Again, it's something you have nothing control over. What can ya do.

That's all for now folks. I'll update this as I think of others. Hope this is a decent start and cheers to you all :-D

I record with a program called dazzle on my Xbox, and it seems like crap compared to FRAPS on my computer

And DON'T swear much.....god I just can't stand lpers who call the other game characters bitches and whores and stuff like that ALL the time. Ugh.....occasional swearing is ok but if you keep saying "whatever I don't care" kinda makes me think "well if you dont care then why should I?"....that's just what I think anyway ^^

There is no need to scream in an LP unless you get scared.

And when you yell. Also don't try to change your voice when you record.

Though thats hard because most people don't like thier voice recorded.

dazzle is quite frankly a very cheap hardware if you want to record from ps3 or xbox you should look into something more expensive to give you that higher quality

Oh I didn't even notice that. *Facepalm*

I was thinking of maybe LPing some total war battles and some LoL matches.

You can watch me fail.
