since the hardest decision they had to make is what seat they're gonna take, front seat or back seat, that is the question. I guess the kid mature enough to pick the front seat is allowed to drive. |

I give up on today's music...I really do... Though let's be honest, if shit like this didn't sell, it wouldn't be made. I can't tell if we as a society have just lowered our standards incredibly low for music, or if this is just all that's out there because of how cheap it is to make. Just drives me completely insane, heard Downeaster Alexa on radio ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVlDSzbrH5M ) and it just got stuck in my head. Replayed it a few times on my way home from work, and was just so awesome. Just amazes me today that all you need is a pretty face, an auto tuner, an extremely simple beat, and you got yourself a career. |

Not this "grass was greener in the olden days" shit again  Our taste shifts as we become older. In my early teens I thought Eminem and Linkin Park were the shit. Then I discovered gothic/symphonic metal ( Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil etc ) and then started actively listening to mainstream pop/RnB. These days I mostly enjoy slow but powerful music. For example: Smashing Pumpkins - The Beginning is the End is the Beginning http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxM4EbN9lMY Metallica - The Unforgiven ( gregorian cover ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8owYGtdfXw My point is, just because you don't like a certain genre ( any more ) doesn't make it automatically crap. For instance, the sailing song thingamabob you linked is pretty dull for me and I couldn't make myself listen to it even if I really tried. But I respect your taste. Less whining please. The more variety we have in our music landscape the easier it should be for you to find your own niche. |

I've noticed that criticism + opinions = whining Is there anyway to criticize and add in an opinion without it being whining? |

No, "just amazes me today that all you need is a pretty face, an auto tuner, an extremely simple beat, and you got yourself a career" is whining, pure and simple. You're being derogatory to en entire music genre that hundreds of millions of people enjoy every day. |

Derogatory comments aren't whining. Most any 'pop' music today I hear is run through an auto tuner sung by a pretty face. Yes it is being insulting...and I was intending it to be. I will edit my statement though so hopefully this isn't whining: "It is my opinion today that most popular music consists of a person with aesthetically pleasing features having their voice run through an auto tuner. I prefer an era of music where I felt confident that the performer at least knew how to read music, understands chord progression and harmonies, and could write lyrics that consisted of more than just "I love you, I need you, Let's have fun, or My heart is broken" While I do not doubt that it brings joy to many people, I feel that this lack of complexity in music seems sub par. I often wonder about the competence of many of today's 'top musicians' - how much music have they studied, can they even simply match pitch without a machine helping them, and do the lyrics they sing actual touch them on a level deeper than superficial." |

You misunderstood me. If you want to call crap "crap" then so be it, disguising it as "fecal matter" hardly changes your point and it's not political correctness I'm trying to achieve here. The problem for me is your claim that mainstream pop was somehow superior back in the day and that "society has lowered its standards". In my opinion, music has simply...changed... The focus is more on the beat and not lyrics because it's intended for late teens/early 20s nightclub people. Even I listen to a pop/dance music radio station in the mornings on the bus. Not because I want a deeply enriching experience but because I need something to wake me up and a simple catchy tune with easily understandable lyrics do the trick just fine. In my eyes, you want the genre to do something it was never designed for and you're silly if you insult it because of that. EDIT: The song in the original post truly is horrible though, if most of the stuff you hear on the radio is similar to that in the states then I do feel sorry for you

Tbh societies standards have been lowered. (this is my opinion based on i think society has gone down the drain anyways.) People used to have talent, rather than going lame tv shows like 'Britains got talent' or i dunno what the american's call it, something with Simon Cowell in it. (Can tell i watch these shows -_-). Then again, show biz as in all areas of life its not what you know it's who you know. Most music today, in all Genres; even the ones I like, seem to have the same beat and similar lyrics that it gets pretty boring. Tough you do sometimes find some awesome and unique people, they end up being pressured to produce similar work because of 'what sells' and this is probably been because most music (mainstream) is tareted at younger audiences, and they generally like to follow the crowd. But this is my opinion  |

I can see both Lemmi and Toe's points. Although I understand Toe's POV and why he says the things he does I do personally agree with Lemmi on this. It may have to do with the fact that I'm not very big on criticizing or judging.. but I think if that's what people are liking these days then that's fine with me lol. For instance, I can't listen to Pink Floyd. I find it sooo boring. Yet I will respect the opinions of people who do like it and accept that my opinion is just that... an opinion. *shrug* I have long since learned that Toe is very strongly opinionated hehe .That Friday song though even I raise my brow at haha. Her voice is rather grating. Especially when she says "Friday". |

I agree with this, my dad listens to pink floyd non stop but then he probably hates the music I like :P. I actually quite like that Rebecca Black song. It's not technically well made, her voice isn't the best and the lyrics aren't thought provoking but it makes me feel good and it's kind of catchy. And that's a valid reason to like a song. Westboro Baptist Chruch cover a Lady Gaga song I kid you not. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEgxBOtAOIM |
