My boyfriend is quite good at playing electric guitar and he taught himself by buying a guitar and reading guitar tabs and stuff on the internet. He also looked at some youtube videos. Just google it :)

I actually taught myself how to play the piano for awhile, but I didn't make any major improvements. Then I said, "screw it, I'll take lessons."

But take my word for it, 1 on 1 lessons are the best you can possibly get, no matter what the instrument. It takes a lot of time and dedication to learn how to play an instrument, only do it if you're 100% up to the challenge.

I used to play guitar fr a while.
Other people are your best teacher.
Why do you want an electric guitar?

it's true that having a teacher is always the best thing, but it IS doable on your own. But like unfie says, you do need a lot of dedication and you have to spend a LOT of time learning and you will always learn slower and need more time than someone with a teacher.

IF you do have this passion, I'd say just go for it. Take the time to find books and videons on how to play the guitar, try it yourself, compare to others, and just have fun with it. Work hard and you'll get there....eventually ;)

What kind of music are you wanting to play. Cus if it's something like punk rock, i could just teach you how to make a power chord and then your good to go :D

I am a drummer, so I can't really help you sorry. (Self-taught deep passion)

I do play the piano a little but I had a music teacher for that for 10 years myself.

Really, that stuff can be pretty tough-- ever heard of Mary had a Little Lamb? :P

Really though. Even if you don't want to get a tutor at your school, I would highly recommend it. If you REALLY don't feel comfortable doing it, that's fine. But you can't just say, "I want to play this song in like a week just cause I wanna." If you want to learn the instrument, really push yourself to do so. If you "just don't feel like" practicing to become better, you're not passionate enough to learn how to play the guitar, therefore you're not up to the challenge.

Well, you can teach yourself how to play by watching YouTube videos for awhile, but eventually you might need a tutor to teach you the more advanced and complicated stuff whether you like it or not... but you never know. By that time, you might actually want a tutor. :P

the liiiiiiiies! My bf is really good and he never had a tutor....granted he's really passionate about it and he gets withdrawal symptoms if he doesn't get to play guitar in a while... (actually had to visit a music store on his first visit here because a week without a guitar was too much :D) I'd link vids of him playing le guitar but you know....no linky linky ^^
