This is something that I've always found very odd and very confusing in 'social networking' types of atmospheres. The idea of 'popularity' for the sake of popularity. Now, I want to be clear in one point. I don't really ever ask for subscribers or comments, but that's more a personal preference thing. I just get annoyed with some videos that it's literally FILLED with, and so I try to rebel and be the opposite. Ultimately though, I understand why let's players ask for subscribers, or other people who put content out on a regular basis ask for subscribers. You want people to follow the work you put in. And as anyone who has ever LPed knows, it can be VERY time consuming. What truly baffles me is people who ask for subscribers with literally NO content what so ever on their channel...or maybe one or two videos recorded with a video camera that was from the early 60's being held by someone who might as well be driving down a dirt road. I get a lot of messages of 'I subbed you, Sub back please!' - I go over to the channel, and ... nothing. Some favorites that they marked, but no content of their own, or content that I don't know what the person is putting up or why. There are also plenty of "Earn Subscribers by paying for them here!" And you have to imagine that SOME people out there actually did this. It just baffles me. People are obsessed with it in some places. Follow me on Twitter! Friend me on Facebook! Subscribe to me on youtube! I also find it funny when large corporations have twitters. Like Cocacola....WHY DOES COKE NEED A TWITTER?! What could Coke POSSIBLY have to say, and why are 250,000 people interested in what coke has to say?! Sigh... I guess where a lot of this comes from is a recent pickup in my spam mail over "Earn Subscribers" and "I subbed you, sub back k?" I guess I just feel like I'm swarmed by it everywhere I look. Friend us on facebook for a free giveaway! Subscribe to us on youtube for an extra promotion! Follow us on twitter for all the latest! I do find some things funny. I was cursed out in a message by what I can only assume was a 14 year old child with anger management issues when I received a message with something along the lines of, "You esscepted mah frend inviht on youtube. u esscepted my envite fer frend on leeg of legenz...but when i invitd u 2 a gam, u declin. sum frend u r fuking as hoe!" @_@ I guess what things really come down to for me is a confusion at promotions and incentives for following. The people I want subscribed to me, and the people I want commenting, are people who are genuinely interested in what I'm putting out, not for some free game I might give them if AND ONLY IF they hit that yellow subscribe button. I guess I just don't understand this need and desire to have hundreds of thousands of faceless people follow you so you can watch the little ticker under your name increase. And caring about that little number SO much, you'll offer to give away shit just to see it rise up a little bit more. *sigh* |

I'm not sure what these people are trying to achieve with asking people to sub all the time. If I liked the videos, I sub, if I don't I won't. Asking me to sub doesn't make me go "oh...you asked me to sub! I guess I'll just have to hit the sub button then!". At the end of the day, I'll sub to people who have interesting videos. It seems tho that people are kinda being forced to ask people to subscribe. Like if they don't they won't get any subscribers. I do find the whole phenomenon silly. |

I don't really sub to people, and if i do I never ask them to sub back to me. Like the feeling of being sub'd too cause people are interested not because you ask them to and some of them feel the need. I never did on my old account before the "WMG" took it down. Anything I do on my page is for me, and I really don't need a lot of people following, watching, or listening to it. Most interesting thing I got was message with the line in it "I'll do anything for your sub" then a list of things.......wonderful.....I mean the most odd things. Shameless person...... |

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if that was what he received verbatim. People on the internet say some very stupid things sometimes. Their sentence structure and grammar fall apart as soon as you put them in front of a computer. |

That's why I never joined Youtube. Not that anyone would bother subbing me, or whatever it's called. Besides, I prefer watching over uploading. Thanks for your time and have a great day. |

I think, in a way, it's a status symbol. So that you can brag and say "Oh look, i have more subs than you, I win." For people who actually have content the growth of twitter has made them more likely to ask for subs so that they can have "followers". Besides, very few people on YouTube are worth subscribing to anyway. |
