Finished ep 11 of Clannad, still have 12 of the first part to go. Still a really solid show, likely one of the best I've ever seen. |

I actually had no idea what this is (still don't, really), but with Trigger involved, I think it'll be worth keeping an eye on either way. Also, just spent like 40 minutes reading through this (because obviously I have nothing better to do). I like GC, and I still do after reading this, but it's an interesting read and gives good insight on why so many people hate on the show. Now for more spring anime... --------------------------------- No Game No Life: Wow, I've gotta say this was really cool, and I'm really looking forward to the rest of this series. I love how vibrant the art is, it has some funny moments (even better because it's more subtle humor, and less in-your-face), both of the main characters are great, sibling-relationship without sexual feelings or anything like that, and the whole game-thing itself! What I hope for is that some of the more complex games they play will have their tactics explained as they play them, since both the characters are basically super-gamers who know how to win at every game. I get that they don't explain how you win at chess (more or less because it's at the very start), or how he cheated at pokwer, but definitely hoping for some cool commentary on the games later on. Also, find it funny how Sora (male MC) is being voiced by same dude who voiced Kirito in SAO. First Impression: 8/10. --------------------------------- On the topic of spring season, anyone know anything about Break Blade (TV)? Supposedly aired last sunday, but still nowhere to be seen, so idk if it's the same as with AnR (no subgroup picking it up) or what the problem is... Though to be fair, I guess it doesn't matter as much for this one, since there's still the movie to watch. Edited by savepoints, Apr 9 2014, 04:26 PM.

Okay, Hitsugi no Chaika has piqued my interest so far. And a demonic Unicorn in the first 5 minutes. Seriously, the thing had sharp teeth, floaty type powers, could speak, and was trying to kill 2 of the main characters in the first 5 minutes. But was kept busy by one, while the other prepped her magic sniper rifle and then split the unicorn in two. All that, in the first 10 minutes or so. Decent comedy, unique characters, and a girl with some sort of speech impediment that is supposed to have died in a war 5 years previously, but is still apparently very much alive. Yeah, I think I'll keep watching this one for the time being. Granted, the Magical School for morons started off promising, but this one seems to have better writers (hopefully). |

I have yet to watch Clannad, and I think it'll be quite some time longer before I do. The fact that I know it's so sad (and I more or less know WHY it's sad, at least for AS) means I have to be in a very specific mood to watch (which I'm basically never in). Same reason I haven't watched AnoHana yet, for example. Anyway, time for some more spring impressions... --------------------------------- Hitsugi no Chaika: Seems good. I like the different use of magic, and infiltration and such is something that appeals to me a lot, so if they do more with that it'd be awesome. Only real downside to this atm is that I don't know for how long I'll be able to handle the speech impediment. First Impression: 7/10. --------------------------------- Fuuun Ishin Dai Shogun: I was gonna watch this, but then I re-read the synopsis, as well as some other dudes first impression and it's also rated 5.71 after the first episode, so I'm just gonna skip this altogether... --------------------------------- Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka?: Holy shit, this is kawaii as all hell. I mean, seriously, everything about it is just so cute, and you just know it's gonna be cute when CR even has it tagged as "moe". This'll probably be a nice one to watch on those slow, dreary days. First Impression: 7/10. --------------------------------- Ping Pong: Wow, I'm surprised this was as good as it was... The art is really weird, but the characters, especially Smile, are pretty interesting, and I actually liked the ping pong games we got to see. This is the first ever sports anime I watch, but I get the feeling this isn't really your typical sports anime, though I'll definitely stick with it if it keeps on going like this episode. First Impression: 7/10. Borderline 8. --------------------------------- Ryuugajou Nanana no Maizoukin: This wasn't really what I was expecting... It was funny, it has good characters (so far), the story seems like it could really go somewhere with all the branches it has going (phantom thieves/master detectives, Nanana's collection, Nanana's murderer). If this continues to be this good, then I think it's a solid 8, at the very least. First Impression: 7/10. --------------------------------- EDIT: Just watched second episode of WIXOSS (I won't do weekly updates for every series, since I'm watching too many, but if it's something big then I'll prob post about it), and there's one really major problem I have with it. The card game itself. In short, it could be so much better than what it is now, and all they'd have to do is explain the god damned rules! I mean seriously, we basically have no idea how this works, and the rules just seem to change all the time, depending on what'd create the most interesting dialog or w/e between the characters. An example is the fact that whoever goes second always seem to get multiple turns in a row, just to speed it up or w/e... There's apparently an actual WIXOSS tcg coming out in late April, and there's a website explaining the actual rules of that, but I can't read japanese so I don't know how good that is (could be that the rules also differ between the tcg and the anime). If they just fixed this, it'd really increase my enjoyment of the show, and then we can deal with problems such as Yuzuki's stupid wish. Edited by savepoints, Apr 10 2014, 04:15 PM.

You're complaining about a show that's about a card game, but hasn't stated the rules? Have you ever watched Yu-Gi-Oh? Everytime they played a game, they would break the rules. Like a monster card could destroy a magic card just by attacking it. |

Fuuun Ishin Dai Shogun. Yeah. I can see why it got such a low score not even 5 minutes in. For one, the animation sucks. It's the kind where it basically looks like only the jaw is moving and nothing else. Like those books that have those pull tabs to make the pictures move? Yeah, it's a lot like that. The humor, or lack thereof, is a poor man's copy of a bad generic action series with samurai (and apparently steam punk stuff). Just lowbrow "humor" that's hard to even call humor. I haven't been so dissapointed in something I attempted watching since Grown Up 2, and that film was a real POS. Plus it has a crappy rip-off of Bayonetta. There have been some nice suprises so far this season, but this one is anything but nice. |

Well, was a really long time since I last watched Yu-Gi-Oh, so I didn't really take notice of any huge rule-breakers, but as far as I remember it seemed pretty consistent at least... I mean, most of the time, when they drew or played anything but a regular monster card, then they would often explain what it did and how it could be used (because every card was apparently that important). For the most part (tho I remember this being overlooked a few times), they would also explain other rules, such as sacrifices and hitpoints and all. The problem with WIXOSS is that it does none of these things, and it's more like it just wants to be an action anime (isn't there some show where cute magical girls fight for their masters, tho? Might be Mai-hime or Busou Shinki). Pretty much all they've said is how the game influences/is influenced by the real world, but that's it. You know how they seem to use that "grow" thing almost every turn at the start, and that apparently has something to do with what cards you can play (as seen at the end of episode 2), well, that seems like a really important thing to understanding how the game works, and they never say anything about it. In the same way, they never mention what any of the cards do, or how it is you actually lose... Like, in the very first battle they play, it seems like one of their cards are destroyed when they're attacked, in a sort of Duel Masters-esque way. I'm not saying card game anime need to follow their own rules to the letter, but explaining the overall way the game works, and following it to SOME extent (as opposed to having one of the players just do 4 turns in a row) would greatly increase the enjoyment you can get out of a show like that... It also sucks, cuz WIXOSS wants to be all emotional, deep, and dark, but all I can think of are the shitty card battles <.< |

Been awhile since I watched it too, but Yu-Gi-Oh abridged helps. But yeah, Yu-Gi-Oh may have established rules, but they are rarely followed. |

Still, I think it's nice to have them established at least, so that when they DO follow the rules, you actually know what the hell is going on, as opposed to just watching people yelling at each other and playing a bunch of cards really fast... On another note, is it just me or are the region restrictions for the spring anime on CR a bit weird? Seems like a lot of them aren't even available in the U.S. |

I haven't bothered with CR in years. I usually go with other stream websites. I think the only advantage CR has is that they get it a little bit ahead of the others. I've been using AnimeFreak.tv for the most part. |

Sidonia no Kishi: This is one of those shows I didn't really know anything about, but as opposed to Black Bullet or Mahouka, I was not the least bit excited for it either. Could be because mecha don't interest me all that much, or because I found it so soon before starting the season, so there wasn't really time to build up anything around it. In any case, first thing you'll notice about this show is the animation. Instead of your standard style of animation, the characters are all animated with the use of CGI. Now, it's a bit harsh to say that the CGI is bad in itself, but the fact that it's also done in 12 fps and looks horribly choppy makes every single movement incredibly annoying to watch. On top of that, the setting is kinda cool, I guess, the backgrounds look absolutely great, and the music is also pretty great, but the story, and most of the characters just seem kinda meh. It's also incredibly fast paced, more or less to the point that it feels rushed, which sucks... First Impression: 5/10. Hoping story gets better, or probably dropped at 3 ep. |
