I just saw the trailer for Death Parade as well and it does seem really interesting. I hope they manage to keep that kind of tension throughout, but very few shows do. |

Speaking of Death Parade, we're about a month from winter season starting, so I think this may be a good time to talk about what everyone want to watch of the new shows. http://anichart.net/winter Something that actually really surprised me is that all in all, I only have 10 shows from this season that I actually wanted to watch (including the PP movie, which will take 6 months to release on BD), which is a huuuge decrease from the 20+ shows I had from fall season. On top of that, tho, I'll still have 4 or 5 leftover shows from fall season, but then again, might not keep watching all the ones from winter either. In any case, the shows I actually feel like watching this time around are: Psycho-Pass Movie: A pretty self-explanatory one. Even if season 2 wasn't as good as season 1, it's still one of my favorite series, so obviously I'm gonna watch it to the end. Aldnoah.Zero 2nd Season: Liked first season, so pretty obvious. Tokyo Ghoul √A: Season 1 was good, so this one is obvious as well. This is also going to be anime-original, based on the original draft of the sequel manga (so it's still the author writing the story), so that's kinda cool. Tsukimonogatari: Again, gotta go all the way. Death Parade: Like I said, it's just a longer version of Death Billiards, which was great. Just hoping they can keep up the mood for a full-length series. Isuca: Now here is where the uncertainty comes into play. Just by looking at this, and the description, I really feel like watching it and all, but at the same time, it's tagged ecchi. Now, that could mean a lot of different things, but seeing as how it's also seinen, it probably means it's pretty heavy on the ecchi-content. Here's to hoping, though. Ansatsu Kyoushitsu: This is kind of a weird one, but I've seen like a live-action trailer for this, and it got me interested. Looks like it's gonna be pretty weird (in the "wtf is even happening" kind of way), so that could be cool. Koufuku Graffiti: It's straight up comedy, apparently, which always seem to kinda lag behind when watching weekly in my case, but at the same time it's SHAFT, so you gotta try it out. Seiken Tsukai no World Break: Could be awesome action show, could be shit. We'll see. Kantai Collection: KanColle: If I'm dropping anything, chances are this is gonna be the first to go. It's based on a browser game, and the only reason I want to watch it is cuz I heard a song once that used a voice sample from the game, and was disappointed when it wasn't from an anime, so now that it is being animated, I kinda have to watch it. Still haven't watched Durarara, otherwise it'd surely be on the list here as well... EDIT: Now in order of excitement to watch. Edited by savepoints, Dec 14 2014, 10:27 AM.

Akame ga Kill: Final impressions (9/10) So comes a bittersweet ending to a bittersweet show. Overall, I'd say it's one of the most enjoyable shows I've ever seen, becoming somewhat unpredictable through out the majority of it. I will say that this show is much better watched spread out than binged, just because of the effects it can have on the viewers, but this has definitely become one of my personal favorite shows of all time. |

Akame ga Kill - Final Impressions - (9/10): Like Zyan, I think it's safe to say that this has got to be one of the most enjoyable series I've seen, and definitely one of my favorite action shows out there. Even when I try to think of something that wasn't really that good about it, I can't seem to actually think of anything, and that's something that honestly feels great after finishing a show. It's got a great MC, good story with a good amount of twists, awesome action scenes, and they're not afraid to let characters die, which is something I miss in a lot of action series. I also agree that this is definitely better to watch spread out, since binge watching means you might just rush through some of the more emotional moments of the show. In the end, I think White Fox did a great job at the anime-original part of it, and delivered a good ending, to a good show. --------------------------------- Ikoku Meiro no Croisée - Dropped @ Episode 3 - (6/10): Only reason I watched this was because Tien found it, and I was bored, so I watched the first few episodes to see if it was any good. After these 3 episodes, I can at least say that this is not for me. Basically, it all comes down to bringing up cultural differences between France and Japan, woven into standard SOL stuff, that's honestly totally uninteresting. I mean, SOL, especially the kind where it's just "cute girls doing cute things" (even if this isn't exactly that) are one of the most boring types of shows I know of, and this isn't an exception. Might be good if you want to watch a really laid-back show set in France, where absolutely nothing happens, but ya. --------------------------------- Edited by savepoints, Dec 14 2014, 01:55 PM.

I remember watching it when it came out. It is pretty well laid back. There's an episode where Yuna gets lost, but is found, one where they deal with being a small shop having to deal with a huge one nearby, etc. It is pretty laid back, and I can see how that isn't for everyone. |

Well, I'm fairly opposite of you guys i guess. Akame ga Kill - Final Impressions - (5/10): This is probably one of the few animes I've skipped through most of the episodes based on how fucking boring it was. Didn't like any of the characters, plot was boring and fights where drawn the fuck out. I'm sure it does something right can't say what though. To many omg moments and everyone kept shouting things. As someone who loves fighting series this is probably one of the worst I've watched. Might be because I've watched so much fucking Naruto and bleach but compared to those two i just felt it took what they did well and did poorly, rinse and repeat for the worse. I never got invested in it at all, it was good in the beginning but then it just fell off. I dunno, disliked it from start to end hoped to find something i liked but really didn't. One thing I definitely understand is how if you don't get invested in it from the start, then you're not gonna like it later on either. Personally, I think it (especially later on) comes down a lot to the fact that you start fearing for the characters, since they may die at any point, and it adds this extra level of tension to fighting scenes and all. If you don't like the characters or whatever, then you're not gonna care that much when one of them dies, and it'll feel really dumb to you when they really build on that afterwards. I personally have this problem a lot when watching especially western movies, because there's always that "friend" that I just can never bring myself to like one bit, and then he dies his oh so predictable death, and they drag it out so much, that it just makes me feel like it's bad, since I couldn't care less about that character. So yea... Of course, there's no show out there that suits everyone, but I definitely think this is one of the reasons why it could be seen as such a mediocre show (in contrast to the other scores), even if it was a bit "meh" to begin with as well. |

Sounds like DBZ. Wonder why so many of these shows start off great and then tank somewhere along the line? |

Difference here is that at most, Akame's fights lasted from late into the first episode, and continued at the start of the next episode, so at most, you'd have like half an episodes worth of fighting, but spread across 2 episodes, which might make it feel longer. This as opposed to stuff like DBZ, where one fight stretches several full-length episodes... One of the most obvious reasons why many shows like that (specifically long-running ones) tend to drop off after a while is because you can't keep up a good story for 300 episodes. Or rather, it's very hard to do. The story starts getting worse, and when a lot of it consists of fighting, then a lot of it is gonna seem like it's the same thing over and over, so in the end, you feel like you're watching the same fight scene, without any story development. --------------------------------- Parasite - Episode 11 Impressions - (9/10): This is turning out to be such a great series, and that's a really enjoyable thing, because so often you get all hyped for a show only to have it be just "good" or pretty mediocre. Basically, between the start of the show and now, they've managed to throw so much development at the story and the characters that it's hard not to think this is plain awesome. Seeing Shinichi's slow transformation (both physically and mentally) is a really interesting thing, and creates a lot of well-done interactions with the other characters. Speaking of which, one of the major things I worried about initially was how they'd handle his relationship with Murano, what with him having to keep Migi secret and all, but damn, they really pulled that off so well! The "drama" is kept at a reasonable level, and there's no sudden outburst of retardation that you often see in a lot of rom-coms, and now we get this episode, which just moves it along in an even better way! Finally, the rest of the characters are also something I feel really deserve praise. I can't really say exactly what it is, but I just feel like (almost) all of the characters in this series feel very "real". Specifically Kana, Murano, and Shinichi, seeing how they're the main characters and all. It makes for such a nice change of pace from the generic personality tropes you gotta deal with in a lot of other shows. This, no doubt, remains my second favorite of the season. --------------------------------- Ore, Twintails ni Narimasu. - Dropped @ Episode 3 - (6/10): I initially referred to this as a less ecchi version of Daimidaler, and now I think I can say with certainty that it's a pretty spot-on comparison... In terms of parody, they do a lot of things well, in my opinion. Everything is not overly blatant, but enough for you to understand what they're trying to make fun of, and at times, it really is funny. On top of that, the fight scenes are actually pretty entertaining, and like I said I still really like the Tail-gear and all, but that's about as far as this show goes, I'm afraid. While it's not as head-on as Daimidaler, there's still a lot of fanservice and sex jokes, which obviously influences the story a lot in this type of show as well. What we're left with is an occasionally funny, sex joke filled series, with some good action scenes thrown into the mix. The story is barely worth mentioning, and it's not that it doesn't take itself seriously that it's bad (because there are shows like that with a "good" story as well), but in this case it's just bad... I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Occasionally funny, and some good action with nothing else to go with it is not worth watching, in my opinion. --------------------------------- Edited by savepoints, Dec 17 2014, 08:44 AM.

Yeah, I dropped Twintails sometime ago. Too much like a series I watched awhile back where everything is focused around glasses. Essentially the same thing as this show, but instead of "twintails" (a fetish I just don't get) it goes for the whole glasses fetish (another one I just don't get). I get it if someone needs glasses because of poor eyesight, that's fine. But a fetish about it? Yeah. "Twintails" doesn't even have that as an excuse. So I dropped it about 3-4 episodes in. Meanwhile, having recently watched Nostalgia Critic's Disneycember review of Princess Mononoke, I'm kind of in the mood to watch that again. First time I did, I knew very little about Japanese culture, so it looked very weird to me, I liked it, don't get me wrong, but it was just very weird. |

I still have never seen Mononoke... Even worse by the fact that it is supposedly the Ghibli movie I'd enjoy the most. I should get on that some day. In other news, while waiting for the final episode of Psycho-Pass 2, we got more news on Nagato-chan! They're bringing back the entire old cast (meaning we even get Aya Hirano back as Haruhi), and they announced some of the staff. I'm too lazy to list it atm, so you can see it at the top of the page here: http://haruhichan.com/wpblog/33076/disappearance-nagato-yuki-chan-staff-new-visual-revealed/ |

For Princess Mononoke, I would actually recommend the dubbed version (one of the few times I would say this). It's really well done. The people who were in charge of that really went all out for it. You would definitely enjoy this movie. Also, there is no clear cut "villain" in it. I won't say much more than that, as it would give too much away, but it is very good. And until Titanic came out, it was Japan's highest grossing film ever. |

Starting to watch a few new shows that have been out for a while, so I'll just post my general impressions of them so far, even if I'm a little late: Kill la Kill: Episode 3 impressions (7/10) So far, this show is basically Gurenn Lagann. Lots of over the top action, with lots of fanservice. I'm not a big fan of the outfits in the show, but the action is glorious. I'll probably stick through it for just that. Katanagatari: Episode 2 impressions (8/10) Episode 2 impressions because episodes of this are 50 minutes long. The art style is simplified, which is annoying at first, but eventually is not a big deal. The two main characters are completely different from each other, but their interactions are pretty amusing to watch. I've heard only good things about this show, so I'm going to criticize it as such eventually. Edited by Zyan, Dec 18 2014, 02:31 PM.

Yeah, I'll watch a bit of both and we'll see, I guess. Might even watch it tonight, actually, cuz why not. --------------------------------- Psycho-Pass 2 - Final Impressions - (9/10): Does this live up to the first season? Not even close. I've said it before, but I'll say it again. The main issue comes down to the writers not having enough variety in terms of conflict (as certain traits need to be placed on the antagonists), and it creates this feeling of "too much of the same". On top of that, the characters aren't nearly as good in this season, we get much less time for development (with half the episodes), and needless darkness for the sake of being dark, which ultimately just comes back to bite the entire thing in the ass. Had it not been for the huge plot points that come about near the end of this, I would've advocated so strongly that this could've easily been skipped in favor of the movie. With all this said, though, there's no denying that I did still enjoy it. It's the same old badass Akane, the same cool setting, and Kamui is honestly not a bad antagonist (it's just that it's too similar). However, no other installment in the PP-universe will ever reach the heights of the first season. --------------------------------- I actually wrote a much longer piece on PP2, specifically why I think it was pretty much doomed from the start, and why it can never be on par with s1. I'll post it below outside the impression, because it's quite the long read... Psycho-Pass 2: Writing yourself into a corner

I know Tien has been somewhat complaining about the show because of the outfits as well, since it's basically straight up fanservice unless you view it in this really pretentious "symbolic" way, and while that never really goes away, what I want to point out though (not that I think you'll have a problem with it, but I know Tien has mentioned it as well, so...) is that the episodic nature of the series will kind of fade out the further in you get. So the start is really episodic, with random fights each episode, pretty much, but if you stick with it, you'll get to see the real story break out, and damn it's good when it does. |
