Deflate-gate? That's what they're calling it? Smh. Saw this dealie on the news tonight. Are they sure it was the Patriot's ball? I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything - just wondering.

I've heard "Deflategate" and "Ballghazi" as well. And yes, the balls were deliberately deflated by Patriots staff to give Tom Brady and his receivers and edge as a deflated ball is easier for him to throw and for his receivers to catch. It's cheating, and while they still would have whipped the Colts regardless, it just exposes the shifty and underhanded nature that permeates throughout the Patriots organization.

This is a team that's supposed to be the darlings of the NFL yet they've been caught taping teams defensive signals, accused of taping the Rams' Super Bowl practices (that definitely happened too), and now they're at it again.

I'm gonna go grab my tinfoil hat here but I thought they got off pretty lightly for Spy Gate, and as Raine mentioned earlier, the league needs to come down on Belichick. It all comes from him and his insane desire to get and edge anyway possible, an edge he probably doesn't even need because he has probably the greatest QB ever taking snaps from under center. It's really absurd at this point, the man needs to be punished and he shouldn't lead his team onto the field for next week's game.

Did anybody see those interviews today? The arrogance of Brady and Belichick just astonishes me. I think we all know the NFL is probably going to drag their feet and wait until after the Super Bowl to fine Belichick like $5,000 and take away a draft pick. In my opinion, they both knew about it because they've probably done it before. It's definitely a wink wink nod nod situation with the equipment manager, but there's no way in hell Brady was oblivious to the fact that the footballs were deflated.

And I love how Belichick gets away with reading a lame ass statement and essentially refusing to answer any questions. Screw that. Man up and answer the reporters questions instead of staring of blankly into space muttering "That's all I know" over and over again. And what's more, some equipment manager is probably going to lose his job because Tom Brady told him to deflate his balls. What's he gonna say no to Tom Brady? I hope the guy doesn't get the axe. He's the last person who should be punished here.

Can someone explain how it's cheating really? (Not trying to defend actions, I'm actually literally clueless and curious on the matter) Don't both teams handle the same ball? Or do the balls change when one team's... erm "driving" it one way or the other? Not sure that's the term to use there...

My understanding is that both teams give the NFL a bunch of balls which are used for the game and that a couple of one team's balls were hinky.

Pretty much what Wry said, each team brings and uses their own balls (a rule which may now change), so what ended up benefiting New England when they possessed the ball did not benefit their opponent. The benefits of a deflated ball are that it's easier to throw and handle, so it's better for the quarterback and receivers, especially in cold conditions.

Ah okay. Not sure why they'd allow that in the first place. What's the point in making them bring their own balls? Just to make the teams pay for them or something? From the get go it just sounds like a recipe for disaster...

Just a theoretical answer to Sin's question from a total n00b. Maybe in the dawning days the city where the game was played supplied the balls and someone called foul because the home city was working shenanigans on their balls. To make it more fair both teams supply balls and they rely on the honour system. Idk, tbh.

Tried looking around a bit, and this is what I came up with:

There's actually no "logical" reason for this rule to exist (from the point of view of someone who isn't playing or into NFL). How this supposedly works is that some time before the game (like a week), each team receives a package of about 30-ish balls or something around that. They then have this week to practice using these balls, and to break them in (within reason). They then send the balls to the officials, who check them all with a gauge to make sure it's the right weight. The balls are then put in a bag and stored in the locker room with the officials, until 10 minutes before game start, when they are handed to the team.

Basically, it's there as a way to make sure each team, or quarterback rather, plays with a ball they're comfortable with. Why it's like this when every other sport just plays using the same ball, I don't understand, but that's how it is.

However, there are also different balls used for kicking, and these are unwrapped the day of the game, and the equipment guys apparently get about 45 minutes to break them in, and since this is quite a short time compared to a week, they often don't have time to break in all too many of the balls.

So I guess NFL loves quarterbacks more than kickers.

On the other hand, it seems like the QB's are also more annoying than kickers.
