EDIT EDIT 2: MUST READ What is this? I recently got a request for a thread like this. "As a person who's not that into Anime I think it'd be nice to have a thread where members post their "must-watch"/"favourites" list. Sometimes I just want to start an anime but don't know where to even begin looking. If you guys had a thread where each member just has one post that they just edit in new stuff it'd be a great reference list." So that is exactly what this thread is. In here, you can post the shows (using the template below) which you feel are a must-watch (whether they're your favorites or not). How does this work? When recommending anything take note that each post should be reserved for only one recommendation. Those posts will then be linked in the "Recommendation Index" below, and as such you're also required to post using the below guidelines. For obvious reasons, anything from the same franchise should go in the same post (so if you want to recommend Clannad, Clannad: AS, and Kanon, then the first two go into the same post, and Kanon in a separate post). Note that this is not the place to ask for more specific recommendations, as such requests should go into threads of their own. Your post must contain:

Byousoku 5 Centimeter (5 Centimeters per Second) [Movie] Genre: Drama, Romance Summary: "Told in three interconnected segments, we follow a young man named Takaki through his life as cruel winters, cold technology, and finally, adult obligations and responsibility converge to test the delicate petals of love." Why is it a must watch? Everything, from the art to the characters are perfectly crafted, to give the movie a special feel to it. Combine that with the awesome soundtrack, that will make you cry manly tears, you got a "Must Watch" movie. I won't spoil the plot too much here, but the movie basically tells a sad love story about a young man as he grows up. One thing that set this movie aside from the others, are the amazingly drawn backgrounds, which resemble real-life places and the unique way it tells its story. ![]() MAL link: http://myanimelist.net/anime/1689/5_Centimeters_per_Second Personal rating: 9/10 Edited by Lethargus, Oct 26 2013, 04:56 PM.

NHK ni Youkoso! (Welcome to the NHK) Genre : Dark comedy, Drama Synopsis : Satou Tatsuhiro, a 22-year-old socially withdrawn loner, barricades himself in his apartment, subsiding on a meager allowance sent by his parents, only venturing to the outside world to buy food under cover of darkness. One day, afraid he might miss the utility person, he opens the door to find a cute, mysterious girl, accompanying an elderly religious solicitor. ![]() Why is it a must watch ? Is good, yo. Seriously though, it is pretty great. One of the best series I've watched. It revolves around the main character, Satou, who is a hikikomori, an unemployed person avoiding all forms of social interactions. As he tries to figure himself out while blaming his situation on an illusionary villain, with the help of Misaki, a 17-year-old mysterious girl, he goes through diverse problems one might run into in life. A review on MAL sums it up pretty well in a single sentence : "Ever felt that life was so hard, that you just wanted to escape from it ?" This series is funny. If you're into dark humor that is. Sometimes you even feel bad about laughing because of how pathetic the main character is. But then, you realize it's one of those shows that will pump up your moral, before finishing you off. And this is also when you realize that the comedy is by far not the best quality of this show. In my opinion, the best quality is how it handles drama. Although the series uses hyperboles a lot, it remains realistic and handles its drama as such - it's harsh and unfair. But I can't say more than that without spoiling things. Just go watch it. It's definitely one of the better shows out there. Personal rating : 9/10 |

Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica [Series & Movie] Genre: Drama, Thriller ![]() Synopsis: She has a loving family and best friends, laughs and cries from time to time... Madoka Kaname, an eighth grader of Mitakihara middle school, is one of those who lives such a life. One day, she had a very magical encounter. She doesn't know if it happened by chance or by fate yet. This is a fateful encounter that can change her destiny—this is a beginning of the new story of the magical girls. Why is it a must watch? Madoka is one of those shows which are simply better the less you know when you start watching them, which makes a recommendation like this kinda difficult. What I can say is that you really shouldn't judge it by what it appears to be. In reality, it's a deep, emotional story about the maturing of young girls, and their path to becoming adults. It's truly something unique, and something everyone should've seen, even if you end up not really liking it for whatever reason. Personal note: I've chosen to recommend this as both a series and a movie, as I believe this is the best way to experience Madoka. To start with, you have a 12 episode series which is amazing on it's own, but can be somewhat slow. Then you have 2 movies, which are "recaps" of the series, with reworked content. Both movies are only 2 hours long, but cover different amounts of the story, which poses a problem. First movie covers episodes 1-8, so it roughly loses out on 40 minutes of content, while not really adding many new scenes. It retains most of what the story is trying to bring out during these episodes, but in reality there's no advantage to watching the movie. The second movie covers the last 4 episodes, and thus it's roughly 40 minutes longer. It doesn't lose out on any old scenes, and adds a bunch of new and reworked ones, mostly focusing on one specific part of the story. All in all, there's no disadvantage to watching the second movie as opposed to the series. A third movie was also recently released, which is a sequel to the original story, but I cannot comment on this as of now. So conclusion, if you want the overall best experience out of this, I'd highly recommend watching it in this order (just note that the start is still pretty slow, but it'll all be worth it): Episodes 1 - 8 -> Movie 2: Eien no Monogatari Edited by savepoints, Oct 31 2013, 06:33 AM.

Hyouka [series] Genre: Mystery, School, Slice of Life ![]() Synopsis: Oreki Houtarou is a minimalistic high school boy. One day, he joins the Classic Literature Club at his elder sister's request. There he meets Chitanda Eru, Fukube Satoshi, and Ibara Mayaka. Chitanda is a calm beautiful girl but she turns into an embodiment of curiosity once she says, "I'm interested in it (Watashi, Kininarimasu)". Fukube is a smiling boy with a fantastic memory who calls himself a database. Ibara is a short girl and is strict with others and herself. She loves Fukube, but he always dodges her approaches. They begin to investigate a case that occurred 45 years ago. Hints of the mystery are buried in an old collection of works of the former members of Classics Club. The collection is titled "Hyouka." Why is it a must watch?: The whole "mystery" thing in anime is usually reserved for the more serious plots, and usually one would never think of mixing schooling with mystery. Hyouka manages to somehow do it almost perfectly. The characters' personalities are vastly different, yet contrast each other in ways that keeps you interested. It's one of those school shows that was actually done well, to much of everyone's surprise. Overall, I'd say it's one of the most solid and enjoyable I've ever watched, down to the characters and some of the mysteries I couldn't figure out until all the dots were connected together by the main character. Personal Rating: 9/10 Edited by Zyan, Oct 23 2014, 10:46 AM.

Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki (Wolf Children) [Movie] Genre: Fantasy, Slice of Life, (Drama?) ![]() Synopsis: The story covers 13 years and begins with a 19-year-old college student named Hana who encounters and falls in "fairy tale-like" love with a "wolf man." After marrying the wolf man, Hana gives birth and raises two wolf children—an older sister named Yuki who was born on a snowy day, and a younger brother named Ame who was born on a rainy day. The four quietly lived in a corner of a city to conceal the existence of the "wolf children," but when the wolf man suddenly dies, Hana decides to move to a rural town far removed from the city. Why is it a must watch?: Wolf Children is simply beautiful. Not just in terms of the stunning visuals, but also in terms of story, and what it presents to the viewer. This movie pretty much focuses on the struggles of these "wolf children", their family, and the hardships they face throughout their life. It's a pretty emotional piece, but all in all it's pretty bittersweet, I guess. It's from the director of TGWLTT, and Summer Wars, and I assure you that if you liked any of those, then you'll love Wolf Children. It has come to be one of my personal favorite anime movies (only second to, or even on par with, Spirited Away). Personal Rating: 10/10 Edited by savepoints, Mar 15 2014, 04:39 PM.

Zetsuen no Tempest (Blast of Tempest) [series] Genre: Action, Mystery, Drama, Fantasy, Magic, Shounen, Psychological ![]() Synopsis: One day, a sorceress princess was stuffed into a barrel and banished. One day, a single girl was suddenly murdered, and the culprit still runs free. And one day, a battle spanning time and space over magic and revenge began! Sanity and madness, sense and intelligence, self-confidence and convictions. The tragic tale of this irrational world starts now. The Kusaribe family is a family of sorcerers under the protection of the "Tree of Origins". Their princess, Hakaze Kusaribe, was the greatest sorceress of their family. But Samon Kusaribe, a member of their family seeking to resurrect the "Tree of World's End", a tree that opposes the "Tree of Origins" and controls the power of destruction, stuffs her into a barrel, and banishes her to a deserted island. From the deserted island, she sends a message out to sea, which is picked up by Mahiro Fuwa, a young boy who's sworn vengeance upon the criminal who killed his little sister, Aika. Mahiro agrees to help Hakaze under the condition that she find Aika's killer with her magic. But once Mahiro's best friend and Aika's lover, Yoshino Takigawa is rescued from danger, he too gets dragged into this tale of revenge. Why is it a must watch?: Zetsuen no Tempest is loosely based off of Shakespeare's "The Tempest" and "Hamlet" and frequently refers to either the entire series. The entire story is finding out who murdered Mahiro (one of the protagonists) little sister, Aika. The dialogue within the story keeps it interesting, to the point the two protagonists and the opposing leader stand there and talk theories for four episodes while still keeping you interested the entire time. The story kinda falls off during the second half of the show, using more romance elements to fill the place. The ending feels rather anticlimactic, but everything leading up to that point is fantastic. Personal Rating: 9/10 Edited by Zyan, Oct 23 2014, 10:45 AM.

Seitokai Yakuindomo (Student Council Staff Members) Genre-Comedy, Slice of life ![]() Synopsis:Takatoshi Tsuda attends Ôsai Academy, a high school that, due to declining birth rates, is converted from an all-girl school to a co-ed school (with a male-to-female ratio of 28:524). On his first day, he is forcibly recruited into the student council as the vice-president and sole male representative. The story follows Tsuda and the student council as they interact with each other and their schoolmates. Why is it a Must Watch?: Although it doesn't really have much of an overriding plot (plot is pretty much limited to each episode, if that), this series is great for a laugh! It is very light hearted with the worst "drama" in it being one of the main character's complex about her height (16 years old and looks like a grade schooler). There is already a season 1 finished, several OVAs, and a season 2 that is currently being aired. Although the humor is usually sexually oriented, its in a suggestive way rather than the cliche type were a guy stumbles in on the girl in the bathroom. And although romance is somewhat implied, unlike other harem series, it is way overshadowed by the humor and light heartedness. Basically, a moment here and there of one or another of the female characters showing slight signs of attraction to Tsuda (MC), but is often only briefly and usually leads into one sort of gag or another. This series is great if you just want something to cheer you up. Personal Rating: 8.5/10 |

Shinsekai Yori (From the New World) [Series] Genre: Drama, Horror, Sci-fi, Supernatural ![]() Synopsis: A millennium from now, in Japan, exists a utopia. The Protagonist, Saki Watanabe, lives in an idyllic village barred from the outside world. Her world is ruled by the people who possess the "gods' power" of psychokinesis. After finally obtaining her own powers, Saki enters the Zenjin Academy to train along with five other children: Satoru Asahina, Maria Akizuki, Mamoru Itou, Shun Aonuma, and Reiko Amano. Not all is as it seems, however. In this utopian village, strange rumors about a monstrous cat that abducts children circulate, and students are said to disappear from the academy. The world and its history are much darker than they appear and humanity is on the verge of collapse. Why is it a must watch?: As opposed to what the synopsis might have you believe, this is not a show about a group of kids with superpowers going to school and leading a life full of mischief. Rather, this is an incredibly deep and dark story about the society they live in, the people who live there, and it has a huge focus on morals. You get to follow Saki from childhood to adulthood, as she uncovers the dark secrets of the world they live in, and it all really makes you think. It takes a few episodes to get started (3 or 4, iirc), but after that it probably won't take long until you finish it, because you simply MUST know what happens next. Add to this stunning art, and a beautiful soundtrack, and you have a must-watch series. Personal Rating: 10/10 |

Watamote [series] Genre: Comedy, Slice of Life ![]() Synopsis: Tomoko Kuroki is about as socially dysfunctional as it is possible for a first year high school girl to be. We start the story when she realizes she has attended high school for three months without even talking to anyone at all. Not all is lost, however, since she is irrepressibly optimistic about her chances to turn it around and live a fulfilling high school life. Why is it a must watch? This is simply one of the most interesting character studies I've seen. It takes you through the life of a girl, Tomoko, who has severe social anxiety with a side of depression, and it doesn't hold back. Anything that can go wrong usually does, and Tomoko will feel the full effect of the mistakes she makes. In many ways, this is the exact opposite of the standard school anime. Then there's the artwork. It (along with the music) was exceptional at displaying the feelings presented in the scene; whether it be by making the faceless masses actually faceless, drawing Tomoko differently than those around her, having the colors get much darker when she's upset or even going so far as to go black and white in a very sketchy style, and its greatest strength, a large variety of facial expressions. This whole anime is simply one of a kind. I will give a bit of warning though, ignore the comedy tag; there's funny parts to it but it is not a comedy. In fact, it gets downright depressing. Person Rating: 8.5/10 |

Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion) [series] Genre: Action, Mecha, School, Sci-Fi, Super Power, Military ![]() Synopsis: On August 10th of the year 2010 the Holy Empire of Britannia began a campaign of conquest, its sights set on Japan. Operations were completed in one month thanks to Britannia's deployment of new mobile humanoid armor vehicles dubbed Knightmare Frames. Japan's rights and identity were stripped away, the once proud nation now referred to as Area 11. Its citizens, Elevens, are forced to scratch out a living while the Britannian aristocracy lives comfortably within their settlements. Pockets of resistance appear throughout Area 11, working towards independence for Japan. Lelouch, an exiled Imperial Prince of Britannia posing as a student, finds himself in the heart of the ongoing conflict for the island nation. Through a chance meeting with a mysterious girl named C.C., Lelouch gains his Geass, the power of the king. Now endowed with absolute dominance over any person, Lelouch may finally realize his goal of bringing down Britannia from within! Why is it a must watch?: At first, Code Geass gives off the impression to many that it's a gundam rip-off with a large number of robots. While those aspects exist, Code Geass also has more than just that. With a genius protagonist working to give his a sister worth living in, he becomes a terrorist and basically tries to overthrow an empire larger than what the Romans had. Often compared to Death Note, because of the similar protagonists, both have their own aspects that make them amazing and others that make them weak. Code Geass's first season was stronger than the second, but the second ended off strong, making it a show I've watched many times without any real point where I was tired of it. There's a good split between comedy and the serious moments, and keeps a solid pace through out the entire show. Overall, I think it's one of the most well made shows I've ever seen. I'd recommend this show to anyone trying to get into anime, or anyone who likes the kind of anime that emphasizes a strong protagonist with flaws. Personal Rating: 10/10 Edited by Zyan, Oct 23 2014, 10:45 AM.
