I more or less fully agree with what Chris said. This show just screams "badass", from the settings, to the characters, and all the crazy shit they actually pull off (dat boat). Art was good, but wasn't really any breathtaking. However, one of the things that really caught my attention was the music. Like, holy shit, the music for Black Lagoon is so good! The OP is just as awesome as the rest of the show, and I just love the ED. The way it's sort of slower and "calmer" than everything else in the show, yet doesn't completely ruin the moment (looking at you, Elfen Lied), is just great. Also, speaking of Revy, I've got to say I agree about her "sexyness". I mean, the show didn't really focus much at all on fanservice (which is great), but there's no doubt Revy is drawn as a sexy character, and yet it's not something that draws your attention from the rest of the show. I don't know if it's like Chris said, that she's simply too crazy to be sexy, or maybe the rest of the show is just too good. Speaking some more of Revy... Sort of really minor complain I have (mostly because I may have misinterpreted a certain scene), is how they go from being pretty realistic when it comes to guns, and then just throwing that out of the window. Specifically, in one of the earlier episodes, Revy grabs a grenade launcher and goes to take out their pursuers. When she does this, she puts on headphones, and plays some music (this is also where my misinterpretation comes in, as she may only do it to listen to the music). If you think of it as her way of "hearing protection", then that is great, because in reality, explosions at that close range will fuck your shit up. But then, there's episode 7, and the scene with Rock and Revy's confrontation. Here, we both hear Revy shoot, and see the casing fly away, but Rock is alive because he grabbed the gun and redirected it. This scene in itself is pretty awesome, and overall there's really no problems with it (just that I'm overthinking small things). Thing is, you grab a gun like that, and the metal "slider" will fuck your hand up severely when the gun cocks. Then again, when I think about it, I guess they didn't really care about it too much, and the headphones were mostly for her to listen to music, since if we're being super technical, then firing a rifle in a confined space, in a submarine is probably also going to ruin your day... In any case, the fact that it was "episodic" was not a problem at all, and I actually loved how each "arc" spanned multiple episodes, since barely any episodic show does this. This really gave time for each little story to play out fully, as opposed to being rushed or left to the side. As for the ending... Well, it's pretty obvious that it's a setup for season 2, so there really isn't anything to complain about there either. All in all, pretty awesome show; 8/10 |

Did you like it or not? Why? All in all, i enjoyed it greatly. The characters were all interesting in their own way (well, at least most of them) and the art-style was realistic, yet not so much that it became bland and boring. Now i know this show has a second season (+ some extra episodes IIRC), which left the ending with a lot of unanswered questions, especially that mysterious end sequence after every episode with Revy walking at the beach, so i won't go too hard on the show for that. Story/Plot? The first episode was awesome in that it introduced all the main characters and really set the scene for the show and the first few "arcs" were great. It doesn't matter that Revy is OP as fuck and the group is basically plowing their way through everything, the action sequences were awesomely made without being over the top. I would though, have liked to have seen some kind of connection between the different missions that would have tied up at the end, but i guess I'll have to see in the second season. Like, the Nazis were basically just there to be slaughtered (which was awesome though). I feel like the the last few episodes introduced too many "pro-lagoon" characters, like the annoying as fuck blade wielding Thai lady. Not sure what to say about Roberta, other than she needs to be in more episodes. My favorite episode has be #7, where Okajima stands up for himself against Revy and you see how this encounter has changed both Revy and himself. I'm glad this episode came so early, since he seemed kinda out of place with the Lagoon and wasn't really of much use to anyone before that point. Characters? Rokuro Okajima is a likeable character that a lot of people should have no difficulty relating too and it helps you care about him when he is thrown into unfamiliar situations during the show. Revy is the polar opposite of Okajima, with a background of violence and misery. Dutch is the black guy that doesn't die and Benny is your typical techie of the team. I really liked the introduction of Roberta since she was just about on the same level as Revy, which made Revy seem more vulnerable in the later episodes. I really hated the blade wielding (or w/e the fuck she was carrying) Thai lady. She seemed out of place and unnecessary. I would much rather have seen Revy in more dangerous situations than being backed up by some psycho Thai. Not sure what to say about Balalaika, other than her backstory was mildly interesting. I don't get how she didn't help out on missions more though, now that she apparently had access to top military soldiers with special weapons... Art/Animation? As i stated before, the art is kept realistic, yet still manages to remain interesting (mostly due to the exotic locations). The WWII stuff was really well done and gunplay/explosions etc. was well made too. The animation could be kinda stiff at times, but mostly during sequences were it didn't really matter much. I liked the contrast in color between the exotic locations in the Indian ocean and the cold office environment in Japan from where Okajima came. Soundtrack/Sound Effects? I'm not a big fan of the OP, but i guess it kinda matched the style of the show. The ED, though slow, was very interesting as it actually (probably) tie in with the overall story of the show in a mysterious way and not being "just" an ED. The sound effects for the gun-play was awesome and the soundtrack during the action sequences was spot on. It did though kinda lack a more varied soundtrack during the "quiet scenes" i feel. Final verdict: 8/10 Why not 10? Because i felt that the different arcs should have been more strongly connected and that the some of the characters during the last episodes should have been either introduced earlier or be removed entirely. Unsure what "extra episodes you're referring to", but beside the second season, you have 7 "omake" episodes, which are like 3 minutes long and are just for the sake of being funny. There's also a season 3, which is about Roberta's past and all before she became a maid.
This is basically what I was waiting for as well. In the end, it didn't really bother me that much, tho, probably since I knew there's a second season.
Well.. Wasn't she like the head of the russian mafia, and only served as BL's "contractor" or w/e? I mean, her job was never to help out, even if she could. If they couldn't complete the job, then she simply didn't have to pay them. But I guess near the end she helps out because she says something about "owing Dutch", and possibly because Roberta was fucking shit up a bit too much. |

I agree, but is it just me, or was some kind of romance going on between Revy and Rock at some point? I'm talking about the ride in the car, where Rock lights up Revy's cigarette with his own. It kinda felt like the beginning of some sort of "romance subplot" between Rock and Revy that never really went anywhere. Can't remember whether the car ride was before or after their confrontation in EP #7 though. Edited by Lethargus, Oct 31 2013, 06:17 PM.

There's a second season and an OVA series. http://myanimelist.net/anime/1519/Black_Lagoon:_The_Second_Barrage http://myanimelist.net/anime/4901/Black_Lagoon:_Robertas_Blood_Trail
Afaik the second season has some, but nothing really concrete and just random hints here and there. That's what people told me anyway. Edited by Tiennou, Oct 31 2013, 06:24 PM.
