Ok, so I finally finished this show, and I have to say that it's absolutely amazing.

I knew before I started that this would be one of those darker "psychological" shows, but to my surprise, this is sort of a different psychological from the other shows of that genre which I've seen. SSY deals so much with ethics and morals, but there are no black and white situations; there are no apparent right or wrong, and is instead all about what each person values the most in life. This is probably the most prominent around episode 12 or 13 (whichever it actually was), when you learn the truth of the Copycats, the disappearances and the real reason for "Attack Inhibition" and "Death Feedback". I mean, even though you find out about it much earlier, it's presented to you in such a way that it seems purely evil, and only used as a means to gain power, while the truth of it is much more logical, and presents the characters with one such situation in which there's no clear right or wrong.

Another thing I thought of was how even though things are constantly going on, it kinda feels like it's all really slow, and not much is actually happening, and you STILL feel compelled to keep watching and find out what is really going on. There's also the fact that every single thing that happens, or is mentioned in the early parts of the show, play a really big role later on. I think this is one of those shows where if you were to go back and rewatch it, you'd pick up on a lot of subtle things in the dialog which you probably missed your first time through. Another thing that's pretty interesting is how the story takes place over a long period of time (which I originally didn't think), and in the end it almost felt like when you thought back to what happened at the start of the series felt like a completely different series. I'm not really sure if this is a good or bad thing, but it's definitely interesting that there's such a difference in the setting and story the further the story progresses (as opposed to something like Mnemosyne, where the main characters pretty much stay exactly the same through all the timeskips, and thus you can easily relate back to previous events).

Other than that, the music was amazing, and so was the art. I kinda liked how there is only an opening song once in the entire show, which is in episode 16 (which is the one after Maria and Mamouru leaves, IIRC). After that, the opening song replaces the old ED, which really fit the story, in a way. I also really like the setting, and the concept of "Cantus". I don't know how much was left out of the novel, but I would've really liked to see more about the Karma Demons, other than what happend to Shun...
Still, it's rather interesting how during almost the entire show they tease you with the great power which can be demonstrated through Cantus, like Shinki's power, for example, but you don't get to see this ultimate power in action until like episode 18 or something, and holy shit, that was one of the most awesome moments in the show, imo. Then again, you're quickly reminded of the shortcoming of the Cantus, and the new society.

Something I guess I didn't really like (though it's a problem I have with shows in general, and not just this one in specific), is the fact that the main character is also the narrator. I mean, it can take away all the suspense in a scene, because you know that since they're the one narrating, they can't die at any point. Still, I didn't feel like this was a big deal in this show, but it's still there, and I guess it's one of the few pet peeves I have in anime (or media in general).

All in all, a very good show, but not for the "casual watchers", I guess. Solid 9/10.
