Nevermind that the title still say "Week #", I'll change that at some point.

I own this series. It was an impulse buy that turned out pretty good. It does start slow and they did kinda hamfist in philosophy lectures in some parts where it really wasn't needed, but as a whole it has a great atmosphere, good characters, a great dub, and I really enjoyed watching it.

So... I can certainly agree that this show is "experimental"...

Starting with the easy parts, I really liked the art in Ergo Proxy. Everything just looks really good, and I was pretty surprised in episode 19, where there's a lot of characters drawn in this older western, almost Disney-like style. The fighting scenes all looked really awesome, and the designs of the proxies were also really cool. However, I don't know if it's just because I can't stop thinking about the eye shadow, but I keep thinking to myself how Lil has one of the more original character designs out there.

I really liked the characters themselves, too. Something that struck me very early on was how Lil, while acting all tough and whatnot, actually deals with the events on an emotional level. I'm sure there are other characters in other series who does this, but this is the one show I've seen where it's most prominent. At the same time, she's not a whiny little twat who cries at the first sign of friendship, which makes her character so much more realistic and believable, and this goes for all the characters.
Seeing Vincent develop over the course of the series, is also a pretty interesting thing, though it's not nearly as noticable (for lack of better words), due to the fact that the changes happen slowly and span the entire series. I also didn't really know how I'd feel about Pino when I started watching. Most of the shows I've seen with these types of characters (who don't really know or understand anything of human nature, and learns as the show goes on) I've found to be extremely annoying. Thankfully, this was not the case with Pino, but that might be because she actually looks like a child...

Anyway, as for the rest of the series... Basically, I loved the first few episodes, as they felt very much like these darker, gritty western movies (Equilibrium, Blade, etc.) which I personally love, but then came the "journey arc" if you'd call it that. In hindsight, this all vey much makes total sense (for the most part), but holy shit was this confusing when you were watching it. It's like they just throw a bunch of really weird and incomprehensable stuff at you, then explain just a little part of that, and then just throw some more weird stuff at you. Like, there was multiple times I just thought to myself "What am I even watching?", because some of the episodes just seem to make no sense, even in context. There's also the fact that most of the episodes here appear to be mostly unrelated, because there's always an undefined amount of time skipped between each episode, and the episode sometimes start with the story already going, so you're just thrown into the action, unable to really catch up.
But still, once the final couple of episodes came and everything was explained, it was as if my personal rating for the show just skyrocketed again. That's not to say the other episodes were necessarily bad, but there's no doubt that lots of people would be put of by stuff like that (which is why I also think this is very much a "love it or hate it" type of series).

So yea, really enjoyed the writing, what with all the twists and how if you actually look back at these really weird episodes once you've gotten some answers, they actually make a lot of sense. I also noticed early on that a majority of the things that were said or shown were actually very relevant to the plot, which is always nice.

There's that one episode in the middle of all those weird ones tho (can't remember what ep it is), which is like both the slowest and one of the more interesting episodes, imo. It kinda made me want to watch an entire anime about people stuck on a desert island (like, in a more realistic fashion).

So, do I recommend this show?
Absolutely. Even though there is a chance you'll be put off by the weirdness, the series has some great writing, and characters, and really shows what you can do if you just take some chances (which a lot of anime don't, tbh). It's difficult to actually explain the feeling you get when watching this, but even during all these really, really weird parts you sort of feel like you have to watch more, possibly because you want to know wtf is actually going on.

Great show, but would probably not watch again in quite some time...

8/10.

That one you're thinking of, in the middle with them that goes the slowest, is Dead Calm, episode 16. And yeah, it's my favorite episode of the series.
