Hey guys,

Figured I'd share a one shot Kalosh (Ed) wrote up that I'm incredibly excited for. Basically as some back story, he told us to roll up level 20 characters (Pathfinder) for this one shot. Our group is known as The Balance - we basically are servants of the greatest group in the World - The Nine. The Balance doesn't really side good or evil, but for, as expected, balance and prosperity. The balance is called in to intervene when things are REALLY bad. Kalosh sent us this email:

==================================

One week ago, you were summoned to Castle Baramoor to sit with the 9, and were told of the beast in the dwarven deeps. It was humanoid, about the size of an ogre with a blackish swirling energy surrounding its skin. It fought extraordinarily well in hand to hand combat. First it took out a handful of miners, then laid waste to the forge before the guard arrived. The entire dwarven guard was no match for the thing. It was not until Kremdoch, the great dwarf champion and next in line for the throne, fought the beast that any damage seemed to be done to it. But still, Kremdoch fell. That he fell was sad. The way he fell, however, has caused sheer terror.

A small band of dwarves managed to escape - the beast did not seem to follow - and reported that Kremloch struck the ground with his mighty hammer Grolb, and it caused a ripple of waves that stunned all around it - including the beast. Kremloch burst in and struck it a mighty blow. A blow that would have crushed the body of the strongest giant. But the beast still stood - though clearly wounded. Those watching cheered their champion and one more strike would lay down this foul creature. Kremloch struck the ground. Again the waves burst forth, all were stunned. Kremloch leaped at the beast, hammer over head for a final coup-de-grace upon its skull. But as he came within reach, the beast suddenly moved. It was not stunned at all from this blow. It had pretended....And grabbing the unsuspecting Kremloch in its massive hands, it unmade the dwarf into two large pieces top and bottom. It fully resisted a magic effect from weapon made by Novgorod himself.

This was not the worst. For now, the on-lookers were close. They were trying to be near the great Kremdoch to join in his victory. The beast seemed to smile as it struck the ground with its own hand and caused the exact same ripple effect that had come from the mighty dwarven hammer. It had learned the magic from Kremdoch's death. That which Kremdoch could do - the beast could now do.

As if this task were not enough, you are visited by Kalosh Ironheart four days before you are to head out. Seeing Kalosh is not uncommon. Much ale has been drank in the days since you've been preparing to battle - as is the custom. But this time was different. He did not cloak his power as he otherwise always did. Its energy woke you and instantly informed you of the seriousness of his coming. He told you all to head to the inn immediately. Which you all did without question.

Nearing the inn, you all felt it...Dan (I'm sorry, I dont have Dan's wizard's name. Ruallen's grandson) felt it first. A magical energy unlike anything you've ever experienced. It caused your fingers and skin to vibrate - you instinctively reached for weapons, but Kalosh held up his hand. "This way. There is someone who wishes to speak with you." He led you into the tavern, and locked the door behind him with a key and an incantation. Not one of you moved as you stared at the figure standing by the bar. He was a tall, thin humanoid man. His features were roughly elvish, but even more perfect. His nature was clearly benevolent, but his power was frightening. On the surface of his skin danced a light bluish-white magical energy.

"Thank you for coming. My name is Fernlop, and I am The Vistru."

...Out of game for those who don't know, the Vistru are an ancient race created by one of the three primal gods, Syl - who also created the elves, among other things. Vistru magic is banned in the world of Val Erden for many reason - not the least of which being Sandrikar and the Great Sleep which your grandfather's (now the circle of 9) fought to overthrow, But its power is so great, it cant be wielded without corruption. Only two known living beings can cast Vistru magic. One is Ruallen who knows a very tiny bit of Vistru magic, and struggles to this day with not attempting to learn more. The other is your host, the 1000+ year old barkeep, Kalosh Ironheart. The idea that "The" Vistru is standing in front of you leaves you in awe.

"This beast you seek has ancient origins. It is partly to blame for the Great Fire Rift that separates the dwarves from the elves and ushered in this millennium of unrest between those peoples. Until these events, I was not even sure he still existed, for I have never seen him. As I, and a loyal band of friends returned home to Val Erden after a terrifying journey to a different and evil land, I found that my beloved creator had been slain. But first she had made for me a companion. A wife. I was greeted by my wife as soon as we returned...somehow she just...found me. She had these words for me."

"I am Lana. I was Created by Syl to be your companion, and I am glad to see you. She said to tell you she is proud of you. But most importantly, she said to beware the Vestru. It will come. It is your mirror image."

"The creature you seek is this Vestru."

====================================================

This to me is such a great mechanic in a foe. We're slightly unsure of what it does, but the goal in D&D always seems to be to try and deal as much damage as quickly as possible. Now, whatever you use against this thing, it could possibly use against us. From what I understand, this one shot will lead into our next campaign and the story will shift based on the defeat of either this beast or us. It's monsters like this though that I love in D&D. You won't find it in any rule book, hell, you won't find any weaknesses for the thing. Your goal, pure and simple, is to put down a creature that grows more powerful with every strike.

Can it use any magical weapon ability you use on it? Do you even have to use the ability? Do you have to use it on him or will just using it let it replicate it? How strong is it? What are its resistances? What can you do to put it down? Will it always resist effects it knows?

These are awesome questions you wish you could ask, but obviously, that's the fun! Just figured I'd share it - and I'll update after Friday when we run the encounter.
