I picked up for my office a Biosphere...and actually, it's pretty damn cool.

They are a completely self contained eco system, so there's no care necessary at all. Just watch your little shrimp swim around all day munching algae or chasing each other. They last about 2-3 years apparently.
Ultimately, I thought it cool to have on my desk. Just a little sphere with life in it...unfortunately, they have not started building statues to my greatness yet, though I've only had it a couple hours. I assume it will probably take at least a week before they recognize me as their god and master.

So it's like an aquarium, but you don't have to do anything? Awesome (I guess, never had an aquarium, nor a fish bowl so I wouldn't know for real). Wonder if I can get one with falcons...

Falcon one on back order :( Sorry
But yea, the only maintenance is giving it indirect sunlight or office light for like 8 hours a day...no problem!

I can't help but feel like it just looks pretty uninteresting tho... Don't you think? I mean, it may be a cool idea and all, and actually seeing whatever it is lives in the sphere go about their day MIGHT be kinda fun if you're familiar with it all, but if it's just like shrimp and algae, you (or anyone you know) aren't exactly going to look at it and think it's the most beautiful thing they've ever seen, or even close to "pretty" at all, possibly... I mean, it just looks like water with algae and shrimp...

Now a sphere with a falcon on the other hand...

It is fairly uninteresting, and is it worth the $50? Eh...I guess that depends
To me, it's just something cool to have on my desk. I figure it's a bit like a fish tank. Doesn't do much, not exactly something you can cuddle, but it's neat to see this little sphere that contains the building blocks for life in a self sufficient environment.

Cubicle pets :)
