Cooperative Board Games; Damn they're fun!

I'm a HUGE board game fan. Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Carcassone, Risk...so many hours dumped into board games. Still though, I guess I'm not a 'massive' junkie. Honestly good board games can be pretty expensive, and it's tough sometimes to find the people to play with.

I feel stupid for saying it now, but I discovered something amazing while looking for Christmas gifts for my nephew...cooperative board games. Just the idea of playing 'against the board' instead of against other players was so awesome to me. I enjoyed the other board games, but with ultra competitive friends (myself included in that), you know someone is gonna lose the night. You still have fun, but it's a bitter sweet time. But now...board games that you can play with other people AGAINST the game sounded truly amazing to me. I found 'Mice and Mystics for my nephew, and the little we played of it was totally amazing.

Mice and Mystics has you playing as mice. The story basically goes that a magic spell reduced your size, and now you fight cock roaches, rats, spiders, etc. There are multiple chapters to play through with a running story line. You set up the board, most encounters are randomly generated, and roll dice for attacking/defending/etc. It's honestly a TON of fun.

Having so much fun with that, I picked up for myself Eldritch Horror. In that, you play as investigators trying to stop the 'Ancient Ones' from awakening with different encounters. I can't remember the last time I got so excited playing these games. Watching your friend getting two dice, and knowing he HAS to roll a 5 or 6...otherwise horrible consequences. Every player staring intently at the one guy, and the audible cheer that erupts from the table when he rolls a 6...it's so amazing! We ended up losing the first night of Eldritch Horror, but no one walked home with that bitter sweet victory. We all had so much fun, and even though we lost, we all couldn't wait to play again!

Ultimately, the biggest down side on these cooperative board games is complexity I've found. There are SO many rules to keep track of, and it's somewhat easy to just brain fart while playing. I have to say though, I really don't have an interest in playing Catan or Ticket to Ride for awhile now...I'd rather play these cooperative games. You win and lose together. I HIGHLY recommend both Eldritch Horror and Mice and Mystics to those looking to try a cooperative board game (probably starting with Mice and Mystics as the rules are a bit easier to grasp). Cheers!

Huh....I didn't even know those kind of board games exist. Mind you, it's been many many years since I last checked the board game section in any store. Sounds like a lot of fun tho. Sadly, my family is not the kind to sit down and play board games :P

I prefer to dally with card games... like Cards against humanity. Definitely not LP material but it would be interesting to see Toe, Titan, Sin, and somebody else play a game of this.

We played an online game of it during the extra life stream (that sin won...damnit...). I might do that again in the future for something just goofy or fun.

We're playing Eldritch Horror tonight with Ed (Kalosh) and his wife Jen. Lyn brought up to me how much she enjoyed the coop board game in that she isn't as super competitive as myself, but just the idea of all working together to a common goal is so fun. I guess I could see it becoming 'not fun' if you played with someone who wanted to rail road everything. "Ok, you go there, you do this, and you go here" from the 'armchair quarterback' player. We're all just looking to have a good time killing Cthulu. I think as long as you don't have 'that guy' going, "UGH! Why would you do that?! Stupid!" or things like that, it will be a lot of fun.

Wish us luck, tonight...Cthulu will not be reborn!

I'm 100 % sure I've seen a video game version of this game, cards mechanics and all, but I can't find it...

That would be really interesting if you found it. Quick Google search comes up with only the board game. I would certainly pay to be able to play this online with friends. It's a fantastic game.

Ok so after searching for this a bit more, I started to look more into Fantasy Flight Games website, as they have a list of all their products. Turns out though, there's no official version of Eldritch Horror available in digital format (a version affiliated with FFG, that is). What Rep posted is also one of their games (specifically a digital version based on the board game), which is probably the closest you'd get, although I never watched that entire video so I don't know if there's actually multiplayer. Similarily, there's a game called Arkham Horror, also available as digital, but I'm not too sure about that game either.

You might as well check out their website, I guess. Point is that if there is a game, it's some homemade thing someone made somewhere, most likely.
