Yugioh is war!; A new perspective on the game

This article’s purpose is to reshape the way you think of Yugioh. You may have read about card advatange, hand advantage, resources, etc. ... but what exactly do those terms mean in reference to Yugioh? Why is hand advantage important? What’s the point of “resource replenishment?” Etc.

Rather than simply define each term, I’m going to use a very large simile to try and teach you how to understand all facets of Yugioh and, thus, become a better duelist. I want you to think of both you and your opponent and yourself as nations. Your nations are rivals that are trying to take control of each other. To do so, you have an army (monsters), weaponry (spells and traps), a supply line (your hand) that connects your nation and transports important resources to the battlefront (the field), and giant stockpiles for your weaponry and training centers scattered throughout your nation (your deck) that are constantly sending you things via your supply line.

Let’s look at your army first of all. Though a few nations intentionally don’t maintain an army at all, but rather rely on advanced weaponry to conquer their opponents for them, these are not mainstream. The majority of nations maintain a strong army of 16-18 soldiers. Soldiers can accomplish a wide variety of things. Some of them are pure attackers, others sabotage your opponent’s weaponry (Mobius, Breaker, Jinzo), and others still are assasins (Old Vindictive Magician, Man-Eater Bug, Zaborg). Other soldiers disrupt your opponent’s supply lines (Thestalos, Spirit Reaper, Toon Gemini Elf), a few strike directly at your opponent’s warehouses and training centers (Vampire Lord, Vampire Lady), and some combine several functions (Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys). Some soldiers can just totally wipe out or dominate the battlefront (Tribe-Infecting Virus, Phoenix, Cyber Jar, BLS-Envoy).

In addition, it’s important for soldiers to arrive at the battlefront at just the right time. You wouldn’t want to throw out a Black Luster Soldier -- Envoy of the Beginning on the first turn, because your opponent’s army and weaponry are both still fresh and fully loaded. In addition, soldiers sometimes speed up the efficiency of your training centers by summoning other soldiers straight to the battlefront from training centers, eliminating the need for them to pass through the supply line. This is good, because it can take a while for things to pass through your supply line, and your opposing nation can disrupt your supply line. Giant Rat, Mystic Tomato, Pyramid Turtle, Paladin of White Dragon, etc. can quickly bring out soldiers from your training centers.

Let’s move on to your weaponry. There are two different types of weaponry: spells, 16-18 of which are usually contained in a nation, and traps, 4-6 of which are usually contained in a nation. Traps and Quickplay Spells can be activated even when your opposing nation is taking its turn.

Weaponry can accomplish many things. It can obliterate your opponent’s army (Lightning Vortex, Mirror Force, Torrential Tribute), your opponent’s weaponry (Heavy Storm, Mystical Space Typhoon, Dust Tornado, and to an extent Giant Trunade), your opponent’s supply line (Delinquent Duo), or your opponent’s stockpiles and training centers (Deck Devastation Virus). Deck Devastation Virus, in particular, accomplishes many things at once. Some weaponry serves to better protect your supply line, allowing you to move things from your stockpiles and training centers more quickly through your supply line for a turn (Pot of Greed, Graceful Charity).

Your supply line is very prone to disruption. Some soldiers are extremely brilliant and have figured out a way to re-use weaponry in the scrap heap (Graveyard). Magician of Faith is a prime example. The opposing nation will often choose to recycle the mighty Delinquent Duo superweapon. Thus, while it’s very important to hold several items in your supply line in reserve so you don’t burn your resources up all at once, you also don’t want to allow opportunities to strike at your opponent pass. The longer you wait to use a resource, the greater the chance that your opponent will have a way to neutralize it.

It’s important not to waste resources. Thus, it’s important to clear away your opponent’s battlefront as completely as you can before launching a massive strike at the opposing nation. To bring all your strongest soldiers to the field, only to have them obliterated by the nuke that is Mirror Force or Sakuretsu Armor missile, or halted by the defensive wall that is Waboku, is very annoying, and will sometimes cause you to lose the war. A shortage of resources means your opponent is much more likely than you to have powerful cards at his/her disposal, so manage them wisely!

Bluffing the opposing nation through deceptive communication is important. Your nation won’t always be stronger than your opponent’s, and at times like that, it’s important to project an image of strength. Pretend that your hidden (face-down) weapon is a Mirror Force nuke or similar, and your opponent may hesitate just enough to give you a chance to make a comeback.

Since resources are randomly shoved down the supply line, it’s important to improve your chances as much as possible of getting the resources you need, when you need them. Relying completely on the next resource to arrive by your supply line to be one that can save you (topdecking) is very risky and should be avoided at all costs! Soldiers like Sangan, and self-replacing soldiers like Mother Grizzly, will help you to reduce the number of resources collecting dust in stockpiles and training centers. As well, limit your wartime resources to 40.

Hopefully, this article will give you a new view of Yugioh and help you to duel better.

Only one bad thing...>_<

Now I might call my hand my "Supply Line" in a duel..

"I take two cards from my stockpile and add them to my supply line via my weaponry card Pot of Greed."

Lol, good idea! And Vampy has no reason to bump the topic manually cuz there's a perk that lets you do it without posting...but he could just wanna bypass Apoc in posts ASAP. lol

Lol, erm, you're completely off, TP ... heh heh. One GREAT way to throw off the n00bliest of the n00bs is to summon cards like Pyramid Turtle and Sangan in atk mode. The n00b will rejoice at the few hundred points of damage s/he inflicts ... until the n00b realizes the downside.
