I'm in the mood to rant at the moment, so you, my loyal readers, shall be rewarded with one. This article is of interest to all message board administrators out there, people thinking of starting their own boards, and members wondering why their favorite board is going down the gutter. The number one problem that most Yugioh boards have is that the admin doesn't have enough drive. If you want your board to survive, then you better do everything you can to make it do so. When I started Yugioh Central, I started dozens and dozens of threads by the time the second member, Apocolypse, got here. I read almost everything posted on this board and reply if I have anything to say. Apoc may currently have a few more posts than me, but that just means that both of us are dedicated to this forum. Another major problem is that most Yugioh boards don't have any real purpose. Many board admins just send their friends messages like "heyzz i just b startn mai own yugioh bored wanna join oh and yew can b an adminzzz if yew wanna", sometimes with a bit more attention to the way our language is supposed to be written. Look, that just makes you look like an idiot. Make people WANT to join! Come up with good reasons for them to do so. For example, my original pitch for Yugioh Central stated that we have CotD rather than CotW, we have lots of 4Kids hatred, we have tons of useful articles, and that I'd review every deck posted. If you don't make your board stand out, NOBODY WILL CARE ABOUT IT. In addition, egotistical administrators often ruin a board. Here are some common signs of an egotistical admin: *Artificially inflated postcount *Threats to ban anyone who disagrees with him/her *Coming up with a money or points system, then trying to buy cards off everyone with this useless currency (this is a problem in probably 60% of failed message boards) *Taking sides in petty flame wars *Etc. I'm probably offending a lot of administrators with this post. Well, you need to face your problems and actually put some thought into things if you're one of them. |

You are mostly right on the dot there. So many boards have falied because of common little errors. You have to be able to advertise successfully too. If you have all the best stuff in the world, but have no way of telling others about it, it is as if the stuff doesn't exist. Also, you the Admin have to be a friendly reasonable person. No one will join if the Admin is a terd or unfair to people. He/she also has to be willing to fight for teh site to stay alive such as SOE. He will just not yeild....lol And the site needs to look nice and tidy and have appealing things. And uniqueness is key as well since there are so many forums out there these days. You have to set yours apart from others. Such as this one, few others have articles and CotD reviews. Plus it counts on teh members to that have joined. They have to keep the topics up to date and be atleast semi-commited. Then when more membners join, tyey advertise to poeple they know of and the site grows. Then soon other sites hear of the growing site and may even join. I personally think that this site will have a great run. It definately has teh potential to survive and grow even more. |

One commonplace problem is how most boards have the "General" category at the top. That keeps people away from the actual Yugioh forums, because most people systematically move from the top forum on down and often run out of steam about halfway through. You don't want a bunch of spamacious posts in General -- you want posts with real content in the Yugioh section. |

I know of a dead board as well.....goes by the name of The World of YuGiOh. If you wish to see its remains, be my guest: *Worldy* *tear tear* Poor thing.......... So many boards out there that have perished......just sad...... |

That was not the reason at all. It was: The Tourneys never kicked off No new things occured Membership was rare and slow Not too many people actually posted in many categories Etc......*sighs* basically it fell for the reason all boards fall..... It just wasn't good enough....noy enough commitment from evryone. |

Heh Nice Article and as part of my online intrest include helping people make a succesful board I often come accross many if not all of these problems. In any case why alot of boards fail not just YGO ones is that the Admin team fails to make thier board any different than any other site and this always ends with board death. So My tips _ Start with a good member base say 10-15 active people - build up post for a few days - advertise- this includes topsites, search engines other forums etc - Keep things DYNAMIC and vibrant new topics polls quizzes trivia contest tournaments etc. - Make sure you have a good feel for what your members want and do alot of it. |

Your post is spot-on, Duelist-Underground. And your forum is evidence of your knowledge and experience, as it has over 500 members and ~75,000 posts. Honestly, though, I never look at Topsites. Does anyone? (BTW, want to affiliate?) |
